River Rescue

River Rescue project logoThames21's East London Community Waterways Project.

With support from Thames Water, this project aims to engage the community in working together to enhance the several waterway networks in Tower Hamlets and Newham.

The three year project runs up until 2012 and will see various initiatives developed in the area to connect local residents and businesses with the rivers and canals in this area, including:

- community clean-up events to bring together people in enhancing the local waterways
- forming local Adopt-a-River/Canal groups
- recruiting and training local volunteer leaders
- training and supporting Riverkeeper Volunteers
- opportunities for schools to get involved in holiday environmental programmes
- public engagement awareness and attitude changing to ensure widespread community access to planned activities and programmes

The name for the project was devised by two schools in the area after a competition to design the project’s name and logo. Upton Cross Primary School and Phoenix School helped devise the name ‘River Rescue’ and the logo.
