London CANALKEEPER®
The London Canalkeeper links communities along the capital's
canals from the East End to the Chiltern Hills; working with individuals,
groups and companies to make the canals cleaner and more attractive. A
flourishing network of Canalkeeper Volunteers help the London Canalkeeper
to identify and solve environmental problems on the canals: like litter,
harm to wildlife and graffiti grot spots.
In many parts of London the canals are the only high quality public space.
Everyone has a right to enjoy them but rubbish, graffiti, and pollution
can put people off. More people are using the waterways, but there is
much to be done.
The London Canalkeeper unites all of Thames21's canal work and has created
a unique force; harnessing the dedication of the Canalkeeper volunteers
with the expertise of our full time Canal Teams.
The Canalkeeper Volunteers are uniformed, trained and supported by the
London Canalkeeper and their duties include litter picking, graffiti removal,
reporting vandalism, keeping an eye out for wildlife in trouble and checking
for flytipping and overflowing bins. If they need more help with litter
in the canal, they can call on the Taranchewer (our custom built litter
busting boat) or the Thames21 Graffiti Removal Team for help. All of this
means the canals look cleaner and feel safer than ever before.
