Engaging with young people is vital for sustainable environmental improvement. It provides an opportunity to change attitudes and encourage positive behaviour at an early age. Helping teachers to use the local environment in their teaching enables students to learn from relevant and immediate examples of environmental problems and solutions.Thames21 aims to develop lasting connections between schools and their local environment through our education activities.
Thames21 offers bespoke education activities to primary and secondary schools. Our staff can come into your school to talk to pupils about environmental issues faced by our waterways? Or, even better, we can run a session for your pupils to come out of school to learn about and discover their local waterway first hand!
Thames21 also offers training sessions to teachers who would like to learn more about using their local environment to deliver education outcomes across the curriculum. Our training sessions aim to equip teachers with the skills necessary to run their own education session along a local waterway.
Our education project is supported by Old Mutual.

Education Resource Pack
As part of our education engagement work on the River Lea in East London, we have produced an education resource pack. This pack aims to guide education professionals to use the River Lea as an outdoor classroom for Key Stages 1-4 and A-levels. The pack covers health and safety and includes information on opportunities for additional follow up study and links. Suitable sites for each activity are identified within the pack. Subject areas include geography, history, science and citizenship.

This pack will be continually developed and improved. Your feedback would be appreciated. Please call our East London Office on 020 7515 3337 or email aimee.felus@thames21.org.uk
