Project Habitat

Along the banks of the river Thames in central London, vertical flood defences and developments have seen the loss of much bank side vegetation which provide both food and shelter for wildlife.

Project Habitat is a Thames21 initiative to enhance areas of the River Thames that lack suitable habitat to attract widlife resulting in limited biodiversity. Thames21 is planning to build artificial floating islands, secure wall planters and whenever possible, install native planting schemes such as reed beds.

Thames21 is focussing its small-scale habitat projects in former dock entrances and inlets which provide some shelter from river traffic. Once established, these habitat projects will contribute to increasing the biodiversity in areas of the Thames that have little or no marginal vegetation.

The projects are developed hand-in-hand with local residents, community groups and partners wishing to improve a stretch of river. Wherever possible, communities will be involved in all or part of their construction, planting, monitoring and maintenance.

  • Exisiting habitats (wildlife rafts) installed in Limekiln Dock.
  • Upcoming habitats to be installed at a variety of locations in the former dock entrancein front of the Hays Galleria, downstream of London Bridge.
  • More tbc in 2006 with partners Legal & General Plc and Unilever.

Thanks to our partners for supporting Project Habitat including Legal & General Plc, Limekiln Dock Adopt-A-River group, St Martin's and Unilever.
