London Canalkeeper

The London Canalkeeper is part of the Waterkeeper Alliance, the global environmental movement for clean water, uniting nearly 200 Waterkeeper organizations on 6 continents and 21 countries.

It works with local people to tackle issues that affect our waterways, from pollution, to damaging developments and neglect.

Some of London’s waterways are the most polluted in Britain with the River Lea and its tributaries in East London the dirtiest river system in the country.

Everyone has the right to clean water and the London Canalkeeper works with people to defend this right, protecting the canals and the rivers that flow into them.

In many parts of London the canals and rivers are the only high quality public space. Everyone has a right to enjoy them but pollution, and rubbish damage them now and for future generations

The London Canalkeeper has twinned the River Lea in East London with the Buriganga Riverkeeper programme in Dhaka, Bangladesh. These rivers share many of the same problems.

Spot and report pollution
To report water pollution call the Environment Agency, the Government’s enforcement body. Call them free on 0800 807 060. Hold until you are connected to an operator.
Tell them what you saw, where you saw it and when you saw it. Get a reference number and asked to be called back so you know it has been investigated. When you have done this, call our pollution recording line and leave your name and contact number on the answerphone: 020 7093 6386. Tell us the details of the pollution and the Environment Agency reference number. We’ll use this information to chart pollution incidents.
