Free Angling Coaching for Hackney Community

Environmental charity Thames21 casts off an extensive programme of free angling coaching sessions in Hackney at the East Lake in Victoria Park on Thursday 13 April from 10am until 3pm.

People of all ages, especially young people, are encouraged to turn up on the day to try their hand at angling with coaching and equipment provided for free by Thames21's Tightlines project. For those who decide they want more than a taster session, Thames21 will link participants up with local angling clubs.

Thames21's Project Coordinator Grant Fear said: "The project was set up by Thames21 as a reponse to seeing that young people were using the canal environment in the wrong way for the wrong reasons and making the area feel unsafe to the public."

"Tightlines is a way of tapping into people who are potentially interested in learning how to angle but don't know where to start and at the same time, a practical way to encourage young people to care for their local environment."

This event is part of a larger programme of free coaching events taking place across 3 London Boroughs including Tower Hamlets in 2006. Launched in March 2005 and funded by the Environment Agency, Thames21 Tightlines encourages communities to use and enjoy London's waterways by learning new fishing skills.
