Winter Clean Up on River CrayEnvironmental charity Thames21 is looking for local volunteers to help clean up a stretch of the River Cray in Bexley on Saturday November 25.Thames21's Riverkeeper Coordinator Ashe Hurst said, "Thames21 welcome volunteers to come down and lend a hand to remove litter which can blight this lovely local river. It is this sort of practical hands on work that makes a real difference to the long-term health of the Cray." The River Cray is a beautiful river corridor running through the heart of Bexley. It is rich in wildlife including easy spots of kingfishers and is a popular green space to visit, explore and enjoy. Thames21 work on the River Cray with local volunteers and a network of Riverkeeper Volunteers who take part in regular clean ups to reduce litter and improve the health of the River Cray. Most clean up events are also open to anyone interested in lending a hand. The efforts of Thames21's volunteers has seen an 85% increase in cleanliness on the River Cray and the regular presence of Thames21 Riverkeeper Volunteers on the Cray has helped to reduce the instances of enviro-crime like vandalism, fly tipping and dumping of oils and chemicals. Thames21 formed ten years ago in response to the lack of statutory duty on any organisation to clear litter from rivers and canals. It began working with communities and businesses to clean and green the River Thames and now works on a range of projects across London's 400-mile network of rivers and canals. Event details |
