Sponsor a Thames21 Litter Trap
What
is a Litter Trap?
A Litter Trap is a device designed to remove the floating litter that
mars the magnificent River Thames. They are responsible for collecting
25% of the incredible 1,000 tonnes of floating litter the environmental
charity Thames21 collect every year. There are 9 Litter Traps in operation
in the tidal Thames and are emptied and maintained by Thames21's partner
the Port of London Authority.
What are the benefits to the environment?
Litter Traps remove harmful, unsanitary and unsightly floating litter
from the River Thames -like plastic bags, bottles, cigarette butts, polystyrene
and drinks cans. In particular, plastics pose a real threat to wildlife,
and Litter Traps not only reduce litter in the Thames but reduce the amount
of litter washed out to sea with devastating effects on marine life. Sea
turtles are regularly killed by swallowing plastic bags which they mistake
for jelly fish.
Sponsoring a Litter Trap also means that Thames21 can continue and develop
its work with all sectors of the community to prevent pollution and promote
sustainable behaviour across London's rivers and canals.
What is special about sponsorship on the River Thames?
Planning regulations mean that no permanent advertising AT ALL is allowed
on the River Thames with one exception: sponsorship of Thames21's Litter
Traps.
