Greenwich MP Backs Cleaner Waterways Challenge

MP for Greenwich and Woolwich Nick Raynsford will join Thames21 and local volunteers to clear litter from the Thames foreshore.

The clean up is part of Thames21's Cleaner Waterways Challenge and takes place at low tide on Saturday 28th October in Charlton, Greenwich.

Thames21 launched the Cleaner Waterways Challenge this summer and is calling for at least one MP from every London borough to volunteer on a London waterway before the next General Election.

The charity wants London's MPs not only to lead by example, but to follow the example of the thousands of volunteers who help Thames21 clean up London's waterways bringing lasting benefits to local communities and wildlife habitats.

Leigh McAlea, spokesperson for Thames21 said, 'We want MPs to demonstrate through their actions what can be done to restore littered and neglected waterways to health. Thames21 is delighted that Nick Raynsford will join local volunteers and represent the borough of Greenwich.'

Nick Raynsford MP added, 'The River Thames is fundamental to Greenwich and it is important that we work together to clean and green our magnificent river. I am pleased to back Thames21's approach of involving all sections of the community - including MPs - in its work to bring London's waterways to life.'

Thames21 is calling for volunteers and everyone is welcome. All equipment is provided. Wear old clothes appropriate to the weather. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
