Spring into Action on River Cray

Thames21 needs volunteers to help spring clean the River Cray at Footscray Meadows on Saturday April 28.

Local River Keeper Ashe Hurst said, "We need all hands on deck to spring clean the river and keep it lovely. The more volunteers that turn up on the day, the more unsightly and harmful litter we can remove from the River Cray."

Footscray Meadows is one of Bexley's most beautiful open spaces and consists of rolling landscape, ancient woodland and the River. The riverbanks house a variety of wildlife habitats and kingfishers are a common sight.

Thames21 coordinate a network of dedicated Riverkeeper Volunteers who take part in regular clean ups to reduce litter and improve the health of the River Cray. Most clean up events are also open to anyone interested in lending a hand.

Since the Riverkeeper Volunteer scheme launched in 2005, there has been an 85% increase in cleanliness on the River Cray and helped to reduce the instances of enviro-crime like vandalism, fly tipping and dumping of oils and chemicals.
