River Quaggy Clean Up

Thames21 and local partner the Friends of Sutcliffe Park need volunteers to help spruce up the banks of a much-loved local river.

The River Quaggy runs through Sutcliffe Park and Thames21 is asking people to turn up on the day to help reduce levelsof litter, cut back vegetation and tackle any grot spots.

Thames21's Vic Richardson said, "The Quaggy is a lovely river but it can be marred by river rubbish which is unpleasant for park users and harmful to the wildlife that thrives here. Plastic bags, discarded six-pack holders and cans are typical of the items we find, especially as the weather gets warmer. We hope that when people see our volunteers hard at work, they will be inspired to use the many bins in the park, rather than the river.

Sutcliffe Park acts as a natural flood plain helping reduce the risk of flooding to over 600 homes and businesses along the Quaggy River in Greenwich and Lewisham. The clean up will not only reduce litter but also help to maintain this important flood defence.

All equipment is provided by Thames21. Just turn up on the day and wear old clothes that you do not mind getting dirty. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
