Volunteers Needed for Thamesmead Canal CleanLondon based charity Thames21 is inviting residents, anglers and community groups to help clean a section of the Butts Canal in Thamesmead on Saturday 24 June, 11am - 3pm. The clean up is part of a programme of environmental action Thames21 is rolling out across Thamesmead's network of waterways and is funded by Gallions Housing Association. Thames21's Riverkeeper Coordinator Ashe Hurst said, "The regular clean ups that Thames21 have organised across Thamesmead's waterways in 2006 will not only improve the appearance of the environment, but are also opportunities for local people to get involved with improving the area. "Thamesmead's waterways are an integral part of this landscape. As well as containing many important wildlife habitats, the waterways of Thamesmead should be a place that local people can use, explore and enjoy. " The charity will be engaging with all sections of the community in Thamesmead to set up Adopt-a-River groups and to recruit a new group of Riverkeeper Volunteers who will be supported by Thames21. Tom Broad added, "Gallions Housing Association is delighted to be working in partnership with Thames21 across Thamesmead's waterways to turn the tide against litter. The work to clean and green Thamesmead's waterways will benefit local people, and the environment as well as helping to protect important wildlife habitats." Event details
