Community Re-Planting Event

 Tuesday 24/05/2022

Thames21 Volunteers in Action

After the hard work done by volunteers to manage vegetation and the contractors excavated two backwater refuges and one section of a dual channel, we have now started re-planting of the area.

We are calling for volunteers of all ages (parental supervision required for under 16’s) to help us re-plant, and re-seed the banks of the Cannon Brook, with British native species, such as Purple Loose Strife, Yellow Flag Iris, Water-forget-me-not and many other different species of plants and wildflowers.

This is your chance to come along, get your hands dirty, and do something great for the environment; by re-wilding the Cannon Brook, and help us leave a legacy of natural change for all.

What are we asking? We are asking for volunteers to attend at 10am on Tuesday the 17th May 2022. To help us re-plant the banks and brook bed itself, with appropriate native plant species; which we will provide along with all the tools and knowledge required to get stuck in.

What should you bring? Some lunch, water, and appropriate clothes for gardening and the weather conditions on the day. We will provide the equipment, tools, plants and appropriate safety talk on the day. We will also be there answer your questions about the plants, project and the future of the Cannon Brook.

What will you gain? Aside from the fact that it is great exercise; you will be taking part in re-naturalising the Brook, which will grow into better habitats for wildlife in the future. You will be able to return, year on year, appreciate your own work and take pride in it. We believe that when people connect with their river and nature in a positive way, it can be a very healing thing for both.

About the Enhancing the River Pinn Project: The Enhancing the River Pinn two-year project aims to engage the community, reduce flood risk, increase biodiversity and make it easier for local people to access their river. The project will reach out to those Ruislip communities living near the Pinn and invite them to discover it. Sections of the Cannon Brook, a Pinn tributary, will be restored in order to increase plant diversity, slow the flow of water, increase water storage on the floodplain and reduce siltation. Vegetation management will open up river views, increase light and create a more attractive environment. And by reshaping the riverbanks of the Cannon Brook, allowing water to spread out and soak into adjacent areas, the river will be reunited with its floodplain and be less prone to funnel fast-moving flood water downstream, reducing flood risk.
