Overview:

Taking Action for Healthy Rivers is much more than picking up litter.
By the end of the course (2 days) you will be able to plan your own event, ensure health and safety requirements are met, organise tasks and equipment and most importantly feel more confident in engaging and leading local people to take action for their river.

Day 1:
Thursday 12th August, 10 am – 12 noon and 1:30 – 3:30 pm – ONLINE

Day 1 is designed to help you build the knowledge you have about urban waterways, the pollution problems they face and some action that can be taken. You will build confidence and skills to lead safe, effective and fun waterway improvement events. You will learn to assess a site for hazards and look out for what tasks a group of volunteers can do which will really make a difference.

Day 2: (note this is divided across an online session and an in-person session on different days)

Tuesday 17th August, 10am – 12 noon – ONLINE
Thursday 19th August, 10 am – 1 pm – IN PERSON
at Bury Lodge Wetlands, N9 9LL

Day 2 will take you from thinking like a volunteer to thinking like a leader. As a group you will consider how to motivate individuals to come together and achieve common goals as a group. The practical activity will give you chance to practice delivering a welcome talk/health and safety introduction. You can also get stuck in and do some practical work to help you think through the whole experience.

What to expect:

The course has three brief assignments designed to help you put the training into action. These are a requirement of completing the accreditation but is no obligation to run events once you have taken this course.

Many people take it simply for the learning experience and to join committed event volunteer team, others go on to lead their own events and build successful community-based River Action Groups with our support.
Our trainees have been involved in some exciting work over the years!

You will be provided with a pdf and hard copy of a workbook and other materials that will support your learning. Please get in touch if you have any accessibility requirements that would prevent or hinder you from taking part in this training course,

You will receive some brief pre-course reading and Zoom log in details from Poppy Flint, a Thames21 Training Officer, a week before the course commences. If you indicate on the registration form that you aren’t confirm with using Zoom more instructions and a time to practice using it will be given.

Please note places are limited and booking is essential. People who live or work in the London Borough of Enfield and intend to volunteer on rivers in this area will have priority booking onto this course.
