FULLY BOOKED – Introduction to Community-based Natural Flood Management – practical training

Thames21 have been installing Natural Flood Management (NFM) features in four areas around London, Enfield, Harrow, Hillingdon and Havering. These innovative NFM projects are designed to reduce flood risk downstream and is also contributing to national flood management data.
This series of online and in person training session will introduce local people to how Natural Flood Management works and how they can get involved with monitoring and maintaining NFM features at these different sites.
If you are curious about NFM and would like to get involved with other local residents in supporting this project we encourage you to join us for both an online and practical session. You can also opt to join just one session.
There will be a follow up online training session about planning and delivering safe community-based NFM construction events for people keen to take the next step to help with the continuation of this work in one of these areas. Please note the dates have yet to be set will be planned based on interest and the requirements of the project sites.
Introduction to Natural Flood Management
This session will cover:
- essential theory behind Natural Flood Management,
- understanding flood risk
- the NFM work Thames21 is undertaking around London.

Practical Natural Flood Management –
Woody debris dam building and monitoring
Together we will:
- walk the stretch of river to learn about the project and why features called leaky woody dams were installed
- build some new dams based on the plan for the site
- observe how the leaky woody dams are functioning and use the Slow Flow Catcher app to monitor the impact of the dams
