Leading Action for Healthy Rivers training – River Brent focused EVENING COURSE

November 17 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

If you love your local waterways and want to make them even better, sign on for our accredited ‘Leading Action for Healthy Rivers’ training!

Thames21 are committed to enabling communities to care for their local waterway. We are providing free training to residents who are keen to learn practical skills which they can apply to become one of our Event Support Contractors and/or start River Action Groups, especially in in the Brent catchment and communities project area.

Visit the Leading Action for Healthy Rivers page for full information about the course – note it is still in the process of being changed from in person training to 3 online sessions and 1 practical session.

Overview:

Taking Action for Healthy Rivers is much more than picking up litter.
By the end of the course (4 sessions in total) you will be able to plan your own event, ensure health and safety requirements are met, organise tasks and equipment and most importantly feel more confident in engaging and leading local people to take action for their river.

Session 1:  Thursday 12th November, 6pm – 8pm. ONLINE on Zoom

Session 1 is designed to help you build the knowledge you have about urban waterways, the pollution problems they face and some action that can be taken.

Session 2: Tuesday 17th November, 6pm – 8pm. ONLINE on Zoom

Session 2 will build confidence and skills to lead safe, effective and fun waterway improvement events. You will learn to assess a site for hazards and look out for what tasks a group of volunteers can do which will really make a difference.

Session 3: Thursday 19th November, 6pm – 8pm. ONLINE on Zoom

Session 3 will take you from thinking like a volunteer to thinking like a leader. As a group you will consider how to motivate individuals to come together and achieve common goals as a group.

Session 4: Saturday 21st November, approx 10am – 12:30pm. Exact location on the River Brent and event time to be confirmed.

Session 4 will give you chance to practice delivering welcome talk/health and safety briefing as well as considering how you would run your own event at this site. You’ll also get stuck in and do some practical work to help you think through the whole experience.

What to expect:

The course has three brief assignments designed to help you put the training into action. These are a requirement of completing the accreditation but is no obligation to run events once you have taken this course.

Many people take it simply for the learning experience and to join committed event volunteer team, others go on to lead their own events and build successful community-based River Action Groups with our support.
Our trainees have been involved in some exciting work over the years!

You will be provided with a pdf workbook and other materials that will support your learning. A hard copy of the workbook can also be send by post. Please get in touch if you have any accessibility requirements that would prevent or hinder you from taking part in either the online or practical part of this training course,

You will receive some brief pre-course reading and Zoom log in details from Poppy Flint, a Thames21 Training Officer, a week before the course commences. If you indicate on the registration form that you aren’t confirm with using Zoom more instructions and a time to practice using it will be given.

Please note places are limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis. Booking is essential.
