Natural Flood Management on Rise Park Stream – training and site walk

September 24 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Thames21 and partners Land of the Fanns have been installing Natural Flood Management (NFM) features on Rise Park Stream in Bedfords Park, Havering. This innovative NFM project is designed to reduce flood risk downstream and is also contributing to national flood management data.

We are running two events so that people can find out more about how Natural Flood Management works and how they can get involved with monitoring and maintaining NFM features on Rise Park Stream.
If you are curious about NFM and would like to get involved with other local residents in supporting this project please do join us for either or both of the sessions.

Tuesday 22nd September, 10 am – 12 pm – ONLINE

This session will cover some of the theory behind Natural Flood Management, understanding flood risk and about the work Thames21 is undertaking around London.

Thursday 24th September, 10 am – 1 pm – ON SITE

Together we will:

  • walk the stretch of river to learn about the project and why features called leaky woody dams were installed
  • observe how the leaky woody dams are functioning
  • use the Slow Flow Catcher app to monitor the impact of the dams
  • depending on the weather and up to date COVID-19 guidance we might undertake practical work to attach interpretation signs and photo position posts near each dam.

If you have a smart phone please download the survey app called Survey 123 in advance of the event. This is platform used for carrying out the Slow Flow Catcher surveys.

All equipment will be provided
Please wear clothing suitable for being outside for the duration of the event.

Please register using the form below. Please note registration is required and places are limited so please contact Poppy Flint if you need to cancel your place.
More details including a Zoom meeting link and an exact meeting location for the on site session can be emailed nearer the time.
