LONDON RIVERS WEEK River Brent Himalayan Balsam Blitz #2
May 31 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
Join Thames21 and help remove a very invasive plant, Himalayan Balsam, from your local waterway, the River Brent, at Perivale Park. Himalayan Balsam takes over the riverbanks, not allowing other species to grow. By helping remove the Himalayan Balsam you will help the health of the River Brent by:
1. Increasing biodiversity allowing other plants to grow;
2. Decrease soil erosion. Himalayan Balsam is an annual plant which dies back during the autumn. Consequently, due to its shallow roots, a large amount of soil erodes into the water and becomes silt.
All welcome although under 16’s need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. All Equipment provided. No previous experience required and our friendly staff will explain everything on the evening.
Please note the starting location may change to elsewhere in the park where our efforts will have the biggest impact. The start location won’t change after Thursday 16th May. Please visit this page again to make sure you are at the right meeting location.
Looking forward to seeing you by the river bank.
All the best,
London Rivers Week runs from Saturday May 25 – Sunday June 2 2019
Launch opening event – Saturday May 25
There are more than 600km of waterway running through the capital, the same distance between Brighton and Edinburgh – a huge potential resource for people and wildlife not yet fully tapped..
Many of London’s rivers have been hidden behind buildings or buried underground. But many lost rivers are now being brought back to life – restored back to as natural a state as possible by removing concrete banks, replanting and allowing the river to flow more naturally. London Rivers Week helps you find these rewilded rivers and discover what they can do for you, our city and its wildlife.
