THAMES ROAD WETLAND – SPRING PREPARATION

Come and join us cutting back reed beds, to prepare Thames Road Wetland for the Spring nesting season!

WE URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP! Time is running out for us to cut back a large crop of reeds and other plants, on the Thames Road Wetland site, at Byway 105 in the borough of Bexley. The Wetland forms a very important habitat to many types of birds, mammals, lizards, amphibians, and invertebrate species. If not managed, the reed beds become uniform, get silted up, and this raises the soil level leading to the site drying out. The reeds beds act as an important filtration system for our waterways which is vital to maintaining healthy rivers. Without maintenance, The Wetland becoming silted up would lead to a poorer habitat which is less favourable to a variety of resident and migrating wildlife, who desperately need these important sites, now more than ever.

In Just a few hours a few volunteers can make a big impact on the site for the whole year! Yes, you can make a big difference and help to maintain a much needed, loved and key habitat site, from becoming overgrown and less productive for our dwindling wildlife populations.

WHAT ARE WE DOING? – We are supporting the small team who manage the Thames Road Wetland site on a year round basis, and now need your help to compete winter work, before migrating birds return to nest!

We will be getting kitted up in clean waders, gloves, and hi-vis vests, appropriate Covid precautions will also be taken. We will be wading into the wetland itself to manage the reed beds, by cutting back Reed, Reed Mace, Sallows, and de-silting, making room for fresh spring growth. This is vital work and once cut, the reeds need to be moved to an appropriate area on the site, which creates further habitats for other creatures. We may also be carrying out other tasks depending on turn out. We will be using hand tools, to minimise the impact to the site, and working in water from around ankle height up to knee height.

LITTER PICKING – Sometimes we work alongside a local Crayford and Dartford Creek River Action Group, who carry out litter picking, and other maintenance tasks along the Cray River that runs beside the Wetland. We will mostly be carrying out activity in the Wetland, but depending on the day, may require some help with this from some volunteers.

THE TEAM –  Chris, Ray and Pamela, manage the site, and are extremely knowledgeable about the wonderful plants and animal species to be found on site, of which there are many to be seen. Taking part as a volunteer will give you a view of the Wetland that you will have never seen. It is a great way to connect with nature, and get an understanding of why these sites are so important to us, and why they are very often overlooked spaces. It’s also great exercise in an idyllic setting. We’d love to see you there!

WHY GET INVLOVED? – Aside from the fact that you will be making a huge difference to this site and provide a great habitat for so many species? – you might be lucky enough to see things like Buzzards, Kingfisher, Water Voles, and other rare species that inhabit the site. How do we know that they are there? Because we feel we are lucky to be there, and we get to see them in their natural settings.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING? – We are not able to provide drinks or lunch at this site unfortunately so please ensure you bring a lunch and a drink, you will be working and will need them! Please also ensure you wear warm clothing as we only provide waders, tools and the safety equipment required.

FACILITIES – Due to the nature, quite literally, of the site there are no toilet facilities available, the nearest toilet facilities are in Crayford Town Centre about 10 mins walk away which has a good variety of facilities.  Of course if nature truly calls there are many trees and bushes in an emergency.

WHAT 3 WORDS – spoken.call.strike Type these three words and follow the map to take you straight to us!

HEALTH AND SAFETY – We have a strong healthy and safety policy and appropriate measures are taken at all times to insure participant safety. We also clean the equipment on site after each event as a bio security measure against invasive species transmission, and treat with an appropriate disinfectant. We follow up to date Covid-19 safety guidance and ask all participants to do the same.  Our staff are first aid trained which is kept updated and carry first aid equipment with them.
