Restoring Enfield’s Rivers Event – Albany Park Willow Coppicing and Planting, River Action Day, 31.03.2022 (Thursday)

March 31 @ 11:00 am - 2:30 pm

Thames21 and Enfield Council are teaming up to deliver conservation and restoration events in Enfield, creating cleaner and healthier spaces for wildlife and people.

Join us at Albany Park where we have teamed up with The Friends of Albany Park to hold a willow coppicing and planting event, aimed at improving the health of the Turkey Brook.

The Friends of Albany Park are a new Friends group. They aim to improve the park for people and also for all the animals that call the park home. The team at Thames21 have a few events coming up in partnership with the Friends so keep your eyes peeled! If you would like to join the Friends of Albany park you can join the Facebook Group here or just come down and say hi to some of the members.

The aim of this event is to improve the new section of daylighted river in Albany Park. We will be walking to Prince of Wales Wetlands to coppice willow, before returning to Albany Park to plant the freshly cut willow along the banks of the Turkey Brook. By planting this willow along the banks of the river, we will be controlling erosion in the park whilst also providing habitats wildlife. The Turkey Brook is an excellent vein of green and blue which runs through the north of Enfield. We believe through this project we can maintain the Turkey Brook as an excellent resource for local wildlife.

The section of the Turkey Brook that runs through Albany Park is a wonderful bit of river. Until 2020 the river ran along a straight concrete channel at the north end of the park, however thanks to Enfield Council the channel now flows freely through the park and is connected to a number of wetland areas. This project has now been completed and has been extremely beneficial for both people and wildlife. Come down and join us for a River Action Day and see for yourselves!

To complete these tasks volunteers may be putting on waders and jumping in the shallow wetland and river, but there will also be lots of activities to do on the banks for people who don’t want to go into the water.

Come down and explore this new project in Albany Park! Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary. We provide all the tools, equipment and training so you can just turn up and get stuck in!
