Restoring Enfield’s Rivers Event – Bury Lodge Wetlands, River Action Day 05.07.2022

July 5 @ 11:00 am - 2:30 pm

THAMES21 and Enfield Council have teamed up to deliver conservation and restoration events in the London Borough of Enfield, creating cleaner and safer spaces for wildlife and people.

Join us for another free volunteering event on a Tuesday. A chance to make new friends and learn new skills. A return to Bury Lodge Wetlands, where we hope to be ‘Balsam Bashing’ along the Salmons Brook. It’s a small purpose-built wetland site, hard to reach by most transport, but this brings the rewards of a quiet, idyllic green space, with lots of flourishing wildlife. A good cycling route!

Tasks: Pulling up and removing Himalayan Balsam is an important operation for us. This dominant invasive non-native species grows and spreads quickly, and has a very negative effect on other native riparian plants, by aggressively shading them out! Then in winter when the plant dies back, it leaves the ground bare and banks vulnerable to erosion. No experience is necessary but this is a physical activity in, and beside, a moving freshwater water habitat, and is therefore not suitable for children under 11. Waders provided. We might have a secondary option on dry land; either removing a dominant unwanted plant that has appeared on site, or removing any equally unwanted litter.

Date: Tuesday 5th of July.

Time: 11.00am to 2.30pm.

Location: Bury Lodge Wetlands, Enfield. We will be meeting in the small car park that serves the Church Street (4) Allotment Site, just off the Great Cambridge Road (A10). For those who use the what3words app, a more precise location is deputy.serve.string. Please note, this is beside the Southbound carriageway of a busy main road with no turning right from the Northbound carriageway – although there is a pedestrain crossing controlled by traffic lights at this location which we will use to enter and exit the Bury Lodge site.

By Car: Very few options this time, so public transport is best. The allotment car park is not large enough to support other vehicles unfortunately. There is free parking in a lay-by a short walk up the North carriageway (Red Route parking allowed anytime) but this is often full. Residential street parking can be found in the surrounding area but this is very limited due to the proximity of Edmonton County School to the West.

By Bus: Serving the A10 are the 217, 231, and 617 routes. W8 serving Lower Edmonton School to the West. None are close and will involve a walk.

By Train: Edmonton Green to the South East and Bush Hill Park to the North (which serve Enfield Town). Both are some distance away though and other means will be required to continue your journey.

Bring with you: Your lunch and plenty of water. We will provide hot drinks, biscuits, gloves, waders and tools. Please wear suitable sturdy footwear. Please also dress suitably for the weather!

Everyone is welcome, but please sign up using this new ‘TimetoSpare’ link.  This enables us to let you know of any changes! Such as train strikes…
