Restoring Enfield’s Rivers Event – Enfield Lock Reedbeds Management / Litter Pick / Coppicing, River Action Day 01.03.2022

March 1 @ 11:00 am - 2:30 pm

Enfield Lock River Action Day

Thames21 and Enfield Council are teaming up to deliver conservation and restoration events in Enfield, creating cleaner and healthier spaces for wildlife and people.

Join us at Enfield Lock where we will be managing floating reedbeds at Enfield Lock, getting stuck into a towpath litter pick and coppicing willow if we have time!

The aim of this event is to prepare the Enfield Lock area for the installation of it’s new floating reedbeds in spring. We will be managing floating reedbeds at Enfield Lock, getting stuck into a towpath litter pick and coppicing willow if we have time! It is extremely beneficial to catch litter and rubbish before it leaves the upper catchment and enters into the Thames and the sea.

The section of the River Lea that runs through Enfield Lock is surrounded by lovely wild spaces. However the river itself is channelized and this means it provides poor opportunities for fish breeding. By putting in healthy floating reedbeds, Thames21 and the Environment Agency aim to create good spawning habitats for fish. After installing a number of floating reedbeds a few years back, fish numbers in the area have drastically increased and pike and chub can now be seen swimming regularly around the lock. The roots hanging into the stream have provided shelter and spawning grounds. This spring, Thames21 will be installing even more reedbeds and replacing failed reedbeds. Come down and join us for a River Action Day and see for yourselves!

To complete these tasks volunteers may be putting on waders and jumping in the shallow wetland and river, but the majority of activities will be on the banks for people who don’t want to go into the water.

Come down and explore this new project in Albany Park! Everyone is welcome and no experience is necessary. We provide all the tools, equipment and training so you can just turn up and get stuck in!
