Restoring Enfield’s Rivers Event – Prince Of Wales Open Space, River Action Day 31.05.2022
May 31 @ 11:00 am - 2:30 pm
THAMES21 and Enfield Council have teamed up to deliver conservation and restoration events in the London Borough of Enfield, creating cleaner and safer spaces for wildlife and people.
Join us for this free volunteering event at the Prince Of Wales Open Space, near King George’s Reservoir, in the East of Enfield. A chance to be outdoors, make new friends, and learn new skills. This event will be our fourth ‘Balsam Bashing’ of the season, along the Turkey Brook.
Tasks: Pulling up and removing Hymalayan Balsam is an important operation for us. This dominant invasive non-native species grows and spreads quickly, and has a very negative effect on other native riparian plants, by aggressively shading them out! Then in winter when the plant dies back, it leaves the ground bare and banks vulnerable to erosion. No experience is necessary but this is a physical activity in, and beside, a moving freshwater water habitat, and is therefore not suitable for children under 11. Waders and wellies provided.
Date: Tuesday 31st of May.
Time: 11.00am to 2.30pm.
Location: Prince Of Wales Open Space, Enfield, EN3 6JA. We will be meeting on the North side of the park, at the end of Aldridge Avenue. For those who use the what3words app, a more precise location is jumps.notice.begin.
By Car: Lee Valley Regional Park has a free car park South of Enfield Lock, beside the River Lee Navigation, EN3 6GQ. From there it is a nice leafy walk North West beside Swan and Pike Road to our location. Residential street parking can be found to the North but this is limited. Be respectful of residential access of course. Heron Mead is nearer but this is private. Note there is the Greyhound pub to the North, on South Ordnance Road.
By Bus: This location is not best served by public transport despite being near Mollison Avenue (A1055). Although there are bust stops to the East in Enfield Island Village, served by routes 191 and 491.
By Train: The nearest main line station is Enfield Lock to the North West of the park but this is some distance away.
Bring with you: Your lunch and plenty of water. We will provide hot drinks, biscuits, gloves, waders and tools. Please wear suitable sturdy footwear. If you do not have suitable sturdy footwear we have some wellington boots. Please also dress suitably for the weather! Note there is a Tesco Express to the East at Enfield Island Centre, EN3 6GS.
Everyone is welcome, but please sign up using the ‘Thames21 Event Registration Form’ below. This enables us to let you know of any changes!
