Restoring Enfield’s Rivers Event – Tile Kiln Lane, River Action Day 25.06.2022
June 25 @ 11:00 am - 2:30 pm
THAMES21 and Enfield Council have teamed up to deliver conservation and restoration events in the London Borough of Enfield, creating cleaner and safer spaces for wildlife and people.
Join us for another free volunteering event on a Saturday. A chance to make new friends and learn new skills. This time we will be at Tile Kiln Lane Open Space, where we will be ‘Balsam Bashing’ along the Pymmes Brook.
Tasks: Pulling up and removing Himalayan Balsam is an important operation for us. This dominant invasive non-native species grows and spreads quickly, and has a very negative effect on other native riparian plants, by aggressively shading them out! Then in winter when the plant dies back, it leaves the ground bare and banks vulnerable to erosion. No experience is necessary but this is a physical activity in, and beside, a moving freshwater water habitat, and is therefore not suitable for children under 11. Waders and wellies provided.
Date: Saturday 25th of June.
Time: 11.00am to 2.30pm.
Location: Tile Kiln Lane Open Space, Enfield, N13 6BY. A leafy hidden area of meadow, woodland and brook, just South of the North Circular where the A406 meets the A10. We will be meeting at the East end of Tile Kiln Lane. For those who use the what3words app, a more precise location is tags.mining.showed. On the Enfield Greenway cycle route and the Pymmes Brook Trail!
By Car: Parking is freely available along the length of Tile Kiln Lane on the weekend. But do remember this is inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).
By Bus: The West end of Tile Kiln Lane is served by route W4 . There are also the options of routes 34 and 102 stopping not far away on the North Circular.
By Train: Palmers Green to the West, and Silver Street to the East. Both are some distance away though and other means will be required to continue your journey.
Bring with you: Your lunch and plenty of water. We will provide hot drinks, biscuits, gloves, waders and tools. Please wear suitable sturdy footwear. If you do not have suitable sturdy footwear we have some wellington boots. Please also dress suitably for the weather!
