Restoring Enfield’s Rivers Event – Whitewebbs Park, River Action Day 28.06.2022
June 28 @ 11:00 am - 2:30 pm
THAMES21 and Enfield Council have teamed up to deliver conservation and restoration events in the London Borough of Enfield, creating cleaner and safer spaces for wildlife and people.
Join us for another free volunteering event on a Tuesday. A chance to make new friends and learn new skills. This time we will be at Whitewebbs Park, where we will be ‘Balsam Bashing’ along the Cuffley Brook before it joins the Turkey Brook.
Tasks: Pulling up and removing Himalayan Balsam is an important operation for us. This dominant invasive non-native species grows and spreads quickly, and has a very negative effect on other native riparian plants, by aggressively shading them out! Then in winter when the plant dies back, it leaves the ground bare and banks vulnerable to erosion. No experience is necessary but this is a physical activity in, and beside, a moving freshwater water habitat, and is therefore not suitable for children under 15. Waders provided.
Date: Tuesday 28th of June.
Time: 11.00am to 2.30pm.
Location: Whitewebbs Park, Enfield, EN2 9JN. A former golf course, now open grassland, scrub, and woodland, a dog walkers paradise, in the North of the borough. Special note – they have an operating cafe and toilets! A good place to meet next to the car park. For those who use the what3words app, a more precise location is theme.boxer.radio.
By Car: Large free car park, right next to the cafe and toilets.
By Bus: Clay Hill is served by route 456, around the corner from Beggars Hollow and the park.
By Train: Gordon Hill is the closest to the South West of the park. But this is some distance away though and other means will be required to continue your journey past Hilly Fields Park.
Bring with you: Your lunch and plenty of water. Please wear suitable sturdy footwear. Please also dress suitably for the weather! We will provide gloves, waders and tools. Hopefully hot drinks and biscuits too.
Everyone is welcome, but please sign up using this new ‘TimetoSpare’ link. This enables us to let you know of any changes!
