Thames Road Wetland – Habitat Management

8th August 2025 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Event Series Event Series (See All)
Free

Volunteering some time for wetland habitat maintenance is a valuable way to help the environment and safeguard fragile ecosystems. Wetlands are crucial for biodiversity and play important roles in purifying water, controlling floods, and storing carbon.

It’s not only beneficial for the environment but also a rewarding way to connect with nature and benefit your local community. Your efforts can help protect and preserve these vital ecosystems for future generations.

We have Thames21 staff-supported events on the second Friday of every month, if you would like to volunteer, please come down, we can kit you out with waders so that you can assist with more Autumn Reed cutting in shallow water areas, designed to try and weaken some of the stands of this vigorous plant in order to maintain a greater variety of vegetation types.

There are other tasks too, such as pruning work to open pathways, pollarding sallows (trimming small trees), and some litter picking duties. We will provide all the equipment needed.

You will need work clothes, adequate sun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. As it is wild land there are no toilet facilities on site and the nearest are at shops in Crayford Town Centre about 10-15 minutes away. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided.

The event starts at 10.30am but please arrive at 10am to get kitted up and briefed at the meeting point, which is by the steps near Thames Rd on By-way 105 (what3words location: dome.silly.above),  near the bridge that crosses the river Cray on Thames Road.
