August 31 @ 11:00 am - 3:30 pm
In collaboration with the Zoological Society of London, we are setting up a regular monitoring initiative at the Chinbrook Meadows wetlands.
If you are interested in monitoring the health of the wetlands through sampling invertebrates, please sign up here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wetland-invertebrate-monitoring-training-chinbrook-meadows-tickets-936351361127?aff=oddtdtcreator
Key Information
Date: SATURDAY 31st AUGUST 2024
Location: Grove Park Youth Club, Marvels Ln, London, SE12 9PR
Time: The training session will begin at 11am and finish at ~3:30pm.
Wetlands built as nature-based solutions are increasingly being used as a means of making our city ready for the impacts of climate change and removing pollutants from surface water. To inform design and maintenance, we need to gather evidence on the effectiveness of wetlands.
The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and Thames21 are looking for volunteers to help survey the newly constructed Chinbrook Meadow Wetlands. The new wetland monitoring method developed by ZSL uses the presence and abundance of invertebrates in the wetland to evidence if the wetland is working as it should be. The method is based on the Riverfly Partnership’s national Riverfly Monitoring Initiative which has been adapted to monitor the function of constructed wetland systems.
This training session will be run by ZSL and Thames21 and is part of a wider pilot project to monitor constructed wetlands across London supported by the Mayor of London.
In the training you will learn:
- The background of the Chinbrook Wetlands
- The theory behind the invertebrate monitoring methods and how these help track the health of wetland systems
- How to sample a wetland
- How to identify invertebrates and score a sample
- What to do with the data you collect and how to get involved
Equipment and refreshments will be provided (please bring your own welly boots and lunch!).
Places are limited so please make sure that you can commit to sampling the Chinbrook Meadow Wetlands for at least 6 months (~1 sample per month shared between volunteers) before registering.
*You must be over 18 to attend this course
