SUMMARY:Hack the River: Code for Clean Water
DESCRIPTION:💻🌊 Join Oxford’s data-driven hackathon to tackle the future of our rivers.\nBook your free place here —> https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/uETSQt0PHsiMImSxDav2 \nRivers are in crisis. Across the Thames basin\, only 6% of rivers and streams are in good ecological condition. From sewage and agricultural runoff to droughts\, floods\, and microplastics\, our waterways face a storm of complex challenges. But hidden in the flow of thousands of collected data points lies the potential to turn the tide. \nHack the River invites coders\, data scientists\, designers\, and environmental problem-solvers to unleash their creativity and technical skills on real-world river data. Over two weeks\, teams will dive into the open-source Oxford Rivers Portal\, select pressing “wicked questions\,” and develop data-powered insights and solutions that can drive real change. \nYou’ll form teams at the kick-off session on 13th November\, collaborate intensively over 13 days\, and pitch your findings to experts from across science\, policy\, and conservation at the closing session on 27th November. Winners will receive a cash prize and all participants may have their work showcased on the Oxford Rivers Portal — shaping the future of river health. \nThis hackathon is part of the GovAqua project\, funded by Horizon Europe\, and delivered by Thames21 in partnership with UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology\, The Rivers Trust\, and Makespace Oxford. \n💡 Why join? \n\nTackle urgent environmental challenges with open data\nCollaborate with like-minded innovators\nGain exposure\, win prizes\, and make a real-world impact\n\n🗓 2 weeks | 🏆 Cash prize | 🌐 Real environmental impact \n🧭 Practical Details \n\n📍 Venue: Gallery Space (downstairs)\, Makespace Oxford\n🍸 Refreshments: Paid bar available + free snacks and soft drinks\n📝 Booking: Essential — please reserve your spot in advance\n✉️ Questions: Contact claire.robertson@thames21.org.uk
