DESCRIPTION:Join us for free our Action for Silk Stream monthly volunteering days as part of London Rivers Week 2026. \nPlease book here: Action for Silk Stream LRW Volunteer day – Thames21 Limited \nWe will be in Rushgrove Park\, Barnet \nActivities include balsam bashing and  litter picking. \nBalsam is an invasive plant that we don’t want to see growing along our riverbanks. The best and easiest way to remove it is by pulling it out by hand. It’s easy to spot and easy to pull out. We guarantee that by the end of the day\, you will be an expert in this activity!! DESCRIPTION:Want to learn more about the aquatic life that calls Deptford Creek home? Join Creekside Discovery Centre on a FREE fish survey as part of London Rivers Week 2026. \nDuring last year’s surveys\, we recorded species including Sea Bass\, Common Goby\, Three-spined Stickleback\, Dace and Eel\, highlighting the importance of the Creek as a habitat for a wide range of wildlife. \nThis survey forms part of a series of regular wildlife surveys looking at all species that use the Creek\, including fish\, birds\, invertebrates\, plants and even algae. The data collected helps assess habitat quality and informs future habitat management. \nNo previous experience is needed — this session is suitable for beginners as well as those who have attended surveys before. \nWhat to expect\n\nA guided fish survey led by experienced staff\nHands-on monitoring of fish species using safe survey techniques\nSupport with identifying species and learning about their life cycles and habitats\nAn opportunity to contribute to long-term monitoring of Deptford Creek\n\n  \nWhat to bring\n\nClothing suitable for the weather\nTrousers and socks that can get wet or muddy\nAll specialist equipment\, including waders\, will be provided\n\nThis event is suitable for adults and children aged 10+. DESCRIPTION:Join Creekside Discovery Centre for a free Low Tide Walk in Deptford Creek as part of London Rivers Week 2026.  \nWith the help of our guides\, you will get down onto the river bed\, explore the ecology and wade into the natural and social histories of this fantastic urban space. \nBy observing and appreciating the variety of wildlife in Deptford Creek\, we hope to foster a greater connection between people and the urban nature around them. \nA Low Tide Walk takes about 2 hours\, which includes putting on waders and preparing for the river\, walking up and back down the river\, using nets to observe the wildlife under the water\, and washing waders and hands after the walk. Please arrive promptly for the time stated at the event. \nBy joining our conservationists on this wade into Deptford Creek\, you will learn about the variety of ways we are working to better understand and support wildlife in the Creek. \nWaders and mud sticks will be provided. \nOnly children aged 8 and above can join this activity. SUMMARY:London Rivers Week 2026: The Kyd Brook: Living alongside a suburban river 1920s-2020s. A walk through Petts Wood [FULLY BOOKED - Waitlist Available]
DESCRIPTION:Join urban sociologists Emma Jackson and Louise Rondel and local historians Mel Wright and Andrea Stevens for a FREE guided\, London Rivers Week 2026 walk which traces the route of the Kyd Brook through the suburb of Petts Wood. We will learn about the development of Petts Wood in the 1920s and 1930s and consider how this has impacted on the Kyd Brook. We will also share ‘tales from the Kyd Brook’\, stories gathered at a residents’ workshop which took place during London Rivers Week 2025 which reflect on what it is like to live alongside the brook. We will follow the Kyd Brook into the National Trust woods which once provided the timber for the Petts’ shipyards including at Woolwich and Deptford. From here\, we will leave the brook as it continues its course into Chislehurst then\, as the River Quaggy\, into Greenwich and Lewisham\, joining the River Ravensbourne to eventually flow into the Thames at Deptford. \nAs we walk\, we will invite attendees to share their own knowledge and reflections on living alongside London’s smaller waterways. \nDate: Thursday 28th May \nTime: 6 to 8pm \nMeet at: Station Square\, Petts Wood by JDM\, BR5 1NA \nPlaces are limited\, please sign up here: https://www.pettswood.org.uk/events   \nRoute: \n\nThe route is approximately 2½ km/1½ miles.\nIt is mostly on pavements and will involve crossing some moderately busy roads.\nThe end of the walk will be in the woods where the ground can be uneven.\n\nWhat to Bring: Please wear suitable clothing and sturdy footwear for uneven ground.
