SUMMARY:Thames Road Wetland: Help Manage An Important Wetland (CANCELLED)
DESCRIPTION:Book Here! \nVolunteering some time for wetland habitat maintenance is a valuable way to help the environment and safeguard fragile ecosystems. Wetlands are crucial for biodiversity and play important roles in purifying water\, controlling floods\, and storing carbon. \nIt’s not only beneficial for the environment but also a rewarding way to connect with nature and benefit your local community. Your efforts can help protect and preserve these vital ecosystems for future generations. \nWe have Thames21 staff-supported events on the second Friday of every month\, if you would like to volunteer\, please come down\, we can kit you out with waders so that you can assist with more Winter Reed cutting in shallow water areas\, designed to try and weaken some of the stands of this vigorous plant in order to maintain a greater variety of vegetation types. \nThere are other tasks too\, such as pruning work to open pathways\, pollarding sallows (trimming small trees)\, and some litter picking duties. We will provide all the equipment needed. \nYou will need work clothes\, adequate sun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. As it is wild land there are no toilet facilities on site\, but there are toilet facilities and a canteen nearby at the council depot.  Tea\, coffee and biscuits are provided on site. \nThe event starts at 10.30am but please arrive at 10am to get kitted up and briefed at the meeting point\, which is by the steps near Thames Rd on By-way 105 (what3words location: dome.silly.above)\,  near the bridge that crosses the river Cray on Thames Road. To sign up to this event please click this link: \nThames Road Wetland: Help Manage An Important Wetland  \nPlease contact Sam at Samantha.Dhedhi@thames21.org.uk if you have any further questions. Please ensure you book your place so we can provide kit for you. Finish time is around 2pm\, but feel free to go whenever you need to. \nChris Rose. Volunteer Site Manager. \nThis is an event designed for the community\, to engage the local public with the river and not for corporates. If you are interested in a bespoke corporate volunteer day\, please visit our website https://www.thames21.org.uk/get-involved-2/corporatevolunteering/

The cutting will partly be on a steep bank so a level of dexterity and balance is required. There will also be tasks of moving the cut branches to a near by site to build the dead hedge. \nWe will provide all tools\, gloves\, equipment and wellies. \nWhere to meet: \nThis will take place on the near bank of the River Cray on Footpath 106\, near the entrance to the footpath in Barnes Cray Road postcode DA1 4NR. Google link here \nWhat 3 Words: escape.noted.ally \nPublic transport: The nearest Station is Crayford which is 15 mins walk from the meeting point. The closest bus is the 428 which runs along Crayford Way. \nParking: There is free street parking on Barnes Cray Road near the meeting point. \nWhat to bring: \nPlease dress for the weather and the task. Long trousers and sleeves are advisable as there are brambles. Plus layers to keep warm. \nPlease do bring your own water / drink. \nWe will provide refreshments: Tea\, coffee and biscuits. \nThere are no on site facilities however there are corner shops about 5 minutes walk away and Crayford Town Centre is 15 minutes walk away. \nIf you have any questions\, please email samantha.dhedhi@thames21.org.uk. \nThis event is unsuitable for children under 18 years old. \nPlease get in touch if you have any questions about accessibility. SUMMARY:Thames Road Wetland: Help Manage An Important Wetland
DESCRIPTION:Register here.\nDespite its urban surroundings\, Thames Road Wetland\, which sits within the Green Belt\, is part of a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation\, making it one of the best sites for wildlife in London. It is home to national\, London and Bexley rarities\, including stately Marsh \nSow-thistles\, tiny Brookweed\, Water Voles and Harvest Mice\, along with a wide range of invertebrates and birds such as Water Rail\, Cetti’s and Reed Warblers. \nWetlands like this are crucial for biodiversity and play an important role in purifying water\, reducing flood risk\, and storing carbon. \nLike other sites in urbanised areas\, it lacks the full range of species that would once have helped maintain a balance of wildlife\, such as a variety of large herbivores and carnivores. That’s where the Thames Road Wetlands group comes in… \nWhilst a small group\, led by volunteer site manager Chris Rose\, works at the site most weeks\, we are now holding larger public volunteer sessions once a month on the 2nd Friday of every month with all tools\, waders and kit provided. \nWinter activities include cutting and removing Reed from shallow areas to maintain open water for birds and dragonflies\, sustain a greater variety of plant species and reduce drying out. Also pollarding Sallows (cutting back selected trees and chopping up and stacking the brash)\, silt removal\, occasional path work and some litter picking duties. \nBesides supporting the site’s wildlife\, helping out is a rewarding way to connect with nature and benefit your local community. \nYou will need work clothes\, adequate sun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. There are toilet facilities nearby at the council depot which also has a canteen. There are a some convenience stores about 10 mins away. \nTea\, coffee and biscuits are provided. \nThe events start at 10.30am\, but please arrive at 10am to get kitted up and briefed at the meeting point\, which is by the steps near Thames Road on By-way 105 (what3words location: dome.silly.above) near the bridge where the road crosses the River Cray. \nPlease contact Sam at Samantha.Dhedhi@thames21.org.uk if you have any further questions. \nPlease book your place here so we can ensure we have kit for you. Finish time is around 2pm\, but feel free to go whenever you need to. \nChris Rose. This event is an opportunity to bring together local people\, landowners\, community groups and organisations to share what’s already happening\, and explore how we can work together to help this part of the Thames thrive. \nWe’ll hear from Thames21 about the catchment-based approach\, learn from inspiring partnership projects\, and discover more about the work of the National Landscapes and the wider vision for the area. Most importantly\, there’ll be plenty of time to connect\, share ideas and map out priorities — from nature and water quality to flooding\, access and recreation. Teas\, coffees and refreshments will be provided to keep the ideas flowing. \nWhether you’re already deeply involved in river work or simply care about your local stretch of the Thames\, your voice and experience matter. Come along\, meet others who care about the river\, and help shape the next steps for a healthier\, thriving Thames. \nSchedule: \n5.45pm – Doors open. Feel free to come early and get a drink and some refreshments \n6.00pm – Talks from Thames21\, the National Landscapes\, and Long Mead Farm & Nature Recovery Network. \n7.00pm – Workshop 1: Learn about the amazing wildlife and key habitats in and around the river in this area. \n7.45pm – Workshop 2: Have your say on which positive river projects should happen next. \nThis event is supported by the Mend the Gap programme. The vision of the Mend the Gap programme is that the outstanding national landscape that links the Chilterns and the North Wessex Downs will be enhanced and enriched for wildlife\, residents\, and visitors\, helping to heal and soften the scars left by electrification of the Great Western main line.
