DESCRIPTION:Welcome to one of London’s newest wetlands which is already an award-winner!\n –\nNorthbrook wetland was created from a damp grassy area in a park in Lewisham\, SE12\, by daylighting a small stream. It has two ponds linked by a channel plus meadow and woodland areas. This peaceful urban oasis is popular with residents and park visitors of all ages.\n–\nA new River Action Group is now looking after the site with monthly sessions to manage vegetation plus create wildlife havens including a stag beetle loggery and dead hedge.\n–\nCome along to join us! SUMMARY:River Cray - Balsam Blitz & Habitat Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Join us again to help eradicate Himalayan Balsam from the River Cray for now and the future! \nBook Here! \nThames21 have been laying the ground work to eradicate the invasive species Himalayan Balsam from the River Cray. Himalayan Balsam\, an invasive plant that damages our fragile river systems\, erodes the riverbanks\, outcompeting native plants and grows readily in wet conditions. Sadly\, it has spread quite pervasively down many UK rivers like the Cray in Bexley. \nThis is the second part of our Cray River wades. We will meet at the Mill Pond in Old Bexley\, DA5 1JX where we will spend a short time managing the overgrown vegetation in the pond which is slowing the flow of the river. After a refreshment break we will cross over the road and enter the River Cray where we will wade and pull up the Himalayan Balsam from its root ball and remove it. We will continue the wade for a while and then turn around and wade back to Mill Pond. \nThames21 will supply all the equipment you need on the day. Please specifiy your wader size at registration. \nYou will need to have a good general level of fitness to wade along the river. This event is open to everyone except small children due to the nature of the risks associated with wading down a river. SUMMARY:Thames Road Wetland: Help Manage An Important Wetland
DESCRIPTION:Register here\nDespite its urban surroundings\, Thames Road Wetland which sits within the Green Belt\, is part of a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation\, making it one of the best sites for wildlife in London. It is home to national\, London and Bexley rarities including stately Marsh \nSow-thistles\, tiny Brookweed\, Water Voles and Harvest Mice along with a wide range of invertebrates and birds such as Water Rail\, Cetti’s and Reed Warblers. \nWetlands like this are crucial for biodiversity and play an important role in purifying water\, reducing flood risk\, and storing carbon. \nLike other sites in urbanised areas\, it lacks the full range of species that would once have helped maintain a balance of wildlife\, such as a variety of large herbivores and carnivores. That’s where the Thames Road Wetlands group comes in… \nWhilst a small group\, led by volunteer site manager Chris Rose works at the site most weeks\, we are now holding larger public volunteer sessions with all tools\, waders and kit provided. \nWinter activities include cutting and removing Reed from shallow areas to maintain open water for birds and dragonflies\, sustain a greater variety of plant species and reduce drying out. Also pollarding Sallows (cutting back selected trees and chopping up and stacking the brash)\, silt removal\, occasional path work and some litter picking duties. \nBesides supporting the site’s wildlife\, helping out is a rewarding way to connect with nature and benefit your local community. \nYou will need work clothes\, adequate sun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. There are toilet facilities nearby at the council depot which also has a canteen. DESCRIPTION:Join us to help us eradicate Himalayan Balsam from the River Cray (in North Cray) for now and the future! \nBook Here! \nThames21 have been laying the ground work to eradicate the invasive species Himalayan Balsam from the River Cray. Himalayan Balsam\, an invasive plant that damages our fragile river systems\, erodes the riverbanks\, outcompeting native plants and grows readily in wet condition. Sadly\, it has spread quite pervasively down many UK rivers like the Cray in Bexley. \nThis is a glorious leafy\, easy-paced wade in the river\, where you will see the Cray from a unique perspective. As we wade along\, we will be pulling up the balsam from its root ball and removing it. It is not a strenuous task as the root balls slide out very easily. \nThis wade is from North Cray (Water Lane) to Bexley Cricket Club and back. \nPlease specifiy your wader size at registration. We will supply all the equipment you need on the day. Also bring your own water and any personal food\, ideally in a small backpack. On reaching Bexley Cricket Club\, we will stop for refreshments; coffee\, tea and biscuits which Thames21 will supply. After a break\, we will wade back. \nThis event is open to everyone except small children due to the nature of the risks associated with wading down a river. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr Helen Moggridge on a post-London Rivers Week guided walk along the Old Lea\, learning how we can use trees in rivers to return them to a healthier and more natural state. \n\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a guided walk along the Old Lea to learn about the essential role of trees in rivers and to demonstrate how we can use this understanding to restore our rivers to a more natural state. On this walk\, you will discover the vital role that trees play in shaping our rivers and supporting wildlife (hopefully with some wildlife spots along the way!). The walk will demonstrate some of the natural features along the Old Lea and showcase some recent river restoration works. \nThe walk is aimed at anybody interested in their local river or with a general interest in nature and the environment. \nThe walk will be led by Dr Helen Moggridge. Helen is a river scientist\, environmental consultant and former university lecturer\, with academic research interests in river processes (especially trees in rivers) and river restoration. \nWe will walk the Old Lea around Hackney Marshes. The walk will be around 1.5km and will last for 1.5 hours\, but please join for as long or as far as you wish! The walk will be fully outdoors\, so please dress for the weather and bring some water and binoculars (if you have them). DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE! \nWe enjoyed it so much last year that the Annual Osun River Ritual organisers and Thames21 are again inviting you to this special tribute to the river goddess Mama Osun\, hosted by Michelle Yaa Asantewa. This event is part of the celebration for London Rivers Week. \nOsun is the river deity (Orisa) of sweet waters. She is the symbol of abundance\, beauty\, creativity\, fertility\, joy\, love\, sensuality and so much more. The Ifa tradition of the Yoruba\, from which she stems\, acknowledges her importance to the environment and human life. Without her\, nothing can be produced\, nothing grows or is reproduced\, since she represents the force of nature that expresses creativity\, nurture and divine love. \nThe River Thames\, into which flows the Wandle River where we usually celebrate Mama Osun\, is constantly bombarded with toxic waste. Wet wipes\, plastic bottles and several other hazardous items are thrown into the river every single day. This is a violation of the sacredness of water and therefore of Mama Osun. All indigenous communities have sacred symbols and rituals that promote harmony with our environment. It is our collective responsibility to embrace this harmony by celebrating and preserving our rivers. \nYou are invited to celebrate Mama Osun as a symbol of our life and love for our environment. We will gather at St Mary’s Church\, Battersea for a communal and collective offering of the dainties she adores. This is a wonderful therapeutic and feel good experience – bring the family\, children (big and small) would love it! Please join us afterwards for refreshments at St Mary’s Church\, where Michelle will give a talk exploring the significance of Mama Osun. \nHer favourite items (ebos)\, which you can bring to add to the collective offering include: \n·       Light coloured fruits (melons\, mangos\, tangerines\, bananas\, golden delicious apples\, etc) \n·       Honey\, sweets (unwrapped) and Brown sugar (even molasses)\, sweet biscuits \n·       sweet drinks\, sweet\, sensual fragrance (incense) \n·       coconuts\, nuts\, pumpkins\, pumpkin seeds\, \n·       flowers (yellow and white\, especially) (lots of flowers) \n·       Shells \n·       plantain\, sweet potato\, cornmeal and sweet corn \nPlease note the above is not exhaustive. SUMMARY:London Rivers Week 2026: Introduction to MoRPh CSci training event [FULLY BOOKED]
DESCRIPTION:As part of London Rivers Week\, Cartographer are hosting a free\, open\, in-person ‘Introduction to MoRPh’ training. This one-day training course will teach you how to conduct a MoRPh survey so that you can assess and monitor the physical health of your river. \n\n\nWhy MoRPh? The MoRPh survey is conducted at short river lengths and records physical habitat\, vegetation and human impacts. Surveys are entered into the MoRPh Citizen Science database which produces a series of condition indicators about the health of the river. This introductory video provides further information about the MoRPh survey. \nWhat does the training involve? This course will teach you how to conduct a MoRPh survey and how to enter and view surveys in the database. This one-day training includes a morning of classroom teaching\, followed by riverside field training in the afternoon. We will be visiting a newly-restored section of the River Crane to see how MoRPh can be used to monitor the impacts of restoration. DESCRIPTION:Join Barnes Common Limited for a free riverside walk as part of London Rivers Week 2026. \nA walk along the Thames Path via Leg O’Mutton Nature Reserve – learn about the ecology and history of this valuable waterside place. \n\n\n\n\nA Bridge to Bridge walk to celebrate London Rivers Week 2026. What better way to celebrate than by taking a walk along this wonderful blue and green corridor? \nBarnes Common Limited deliver nature conservation work on the Leg O’Mutton Local Nature Reserve. This peaceful haven for wildlife was once under threat by development but is now host to a diverse community of flora\, fauna and fungi\, including some saplings planted as part of our project to increase the genetic diversity of Britain’s rarest native tree – the Black Poplar. As we walk\, we’ll discuss this and other conservation practices to protect threatened species and their habitats. \nIt is approximately 3km from Barnes Bridge Station to the foot of the Hammersmith Bridge\, where the talk will end. Participants looking for a longer walk are encouraged to cross the Hammersmith Bridge and turn West to return to Barnes Bridge via the path\, creating a loop of approx 7km. There are several nice places to eat and drink near Hammersmith Bridge if people would like a place to rest after the walk. \nThis walk is suitable for all ages but will be aimed mostly at an adult audience. The path is unpaved and uneven but a mostly firm surface. We aim to walk as a group but we will be mindful of people who would prefer to set their own pace. \nSturdy footwear is recommended and as the event is entirely outdoors\, we remind people to dress appropriately for the weather on the day. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate London Rivers Week by joining the River Roding Trust on one (or more!) of their free guided walks along some beautiful stretches of London’s 3rd longest river. \n\nOn Saturday 30th May\, we will stroll upriver from Redbridge towards Debden in two stages\, observing how the Roding’s shape has altered over time and appreciating its rich biodiversity. Along the way\, we will showcase some of the conservation and restoration work the Friends of the River Roding have carried out in recent years and imagine together what more can be achieved in the future. \nThere is of course\, no obligation to attend both stages\, but please ensure you make separate Eventbrite bookings for each one you do wish to attend. \n\nPlease wear comfortable shoes. Carve & print your own floral tile with South East Rivers Trust at this free outdoor workshop for London Rivers Week. \n\n\n\n\nJoin us:\nThe River Wandle has a rich history as the beating heart of local craft and industry – most famously as the home of William Morris’s textile factory. As part of London Rivers Week 2026\, we are hosting a free\, linoprint workshop to celebrate the river and its creative legacy. \nThis event is aimed at people aged 16 and above. DESCRIPTION:How can we come into contact with rivers we cannot touch?  \nJoin artist\, researcher and London National Park City Ranger Becky Lyon for a free pop-up exhibition as part of London Rivers Week 2026\, reclaiming contact with water through experimental photography\, found materials and performative interventions.  \nOn Saturday 30 May\, the artworks will be enlivened by a dynamic\, joyful and hopeful conference confluence of splash performances and BYOS aka bring your own slide community lectures. She runs Ground Provisions\, a ‘schooled-by-the-forest’ for grown-ups and The Department of Artecology\, an interdisciplinary research group exploring artist-led environmental practice. She is currently researching for her PhD\, “Touch as method for critical ecological stewardship in England” at Goldsmiths University of London and has an MA Art & Ecology and MA Art & Science.

How is the Thames Tideway Tunnel helping to improve water quality of the river as part of a 3-stage improvement scheme? \nDuring London Rivers Week 2026\, come and join Ian and Neil from the Environment Agency for a FREE guided walk along the tidal River Thames to visit three of the new ‘Super Sewer’ foreshore sites. You will hear about the water quality history of the Thames\, the engineering and architectural aspects of the sites\, and the Environment Agency’s role during construction and operation of the Thames Tideway Tunnel. \nDistance: approximately 2.5 miles \nMeeting point and time: 2pm at Bazalgette Embankment\, Blackfriars \nThe walk will proceed along the embankment to Tideway’s Tyburn Quay (opposite the London Eye) and end at Effra Quay (adjacent to Vauxhall Bridge) at approximately 4pm \nPlease be prepared with comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing\, healthy snacks and plenty of water. \nAll under-18s must be accompanied by an adult. \nIf you sign up for the event but later find that you can’t attend\, please let us know as soon as possible.
