SUMMARY:Big Wet Wipe Count
DESCRIPTION:Help protect the River Thames by measuring the impact of wet wipes deposited on its shores! \nBOOK HERE. \nJoin Thames21 to gather crucial data on the wet wipes settling in the Thames by getting down and dirty to count them! \nUntil the Thames Tideway Tunnel was connected up earlier this year\, rainfall in central London often caused the sewers to overflow\, sending hundreds of thousands of wet wipes into the river where they accumulated on the riverbed. The Big Wet Wipe Count has allowed us to record the scale of the problem\, and we are looking for volunteers to continue these surveys\, which will now help to assess the impact the tunnel. \nTo assess the scale of the problem and the impact of the tunnel\, we are looking for volunteers to survey the wet wipes on the foreshore and record the final number. \nChildren under 16 need to be supervised by an adult. This event is not suitable for children under 10 years old.  \nThis is an event designed for the community to engage the local public with the river and not for corporates. If you are interested in a bespoke corporate volunteer day. Please visit our website https://www.thames21.org.uk/get-involved-2/corporatevolunteer \nLocation: Hammersmith Bridge – North Side – Meet outside Riverside Studios: 101 Queen Caroline St\, London W6 9BN

SUMMARY:Thames Connections: People\, Land and River
DESCRIPTION:On 22nd April\, please join us in Goring Village Hall for an inspiring and practical gathering focused on the future of the River Thames between Wallingford and Reading. \nBooking required: Please book your free place here: https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/X5xmWdTlJFLsO7cgYATk \nThis stretch of river is part of daily life for so many of us — a home\, and a place for wildlife\, farming\, walking\, paddling\, fishing\, or simply enjoying nature. This event is an opportunity to bring together local people\, landowners\, community groups and organisations to share what’s already happening\, and explore how we can work together to help this part of the Thames thrive. \nWe’ll hear from Thames21 about the catchment-based approach\, learn from inspiring partnership projects\, and discover more about the work of the National Landscapes and the wider vision for the area. Most importantly\, there’ll be plenty of time to connect\, share ideas and map out priorities — from nature and water quality to flooding\, access and recreation. Teas\, coffees and refreshments will be provided to keep the ideas flowing. \nWhether you’re already deeply involved in river work or simply care about your local stretch of the Thames\, your voice and experience matter. Come along\, meet others who care about the river\, and help shape the next steps for a healthier\, thriving Thames. \nSchedule: \n5.45pm – Doors open. Feel free to come early and get a drink and some refreshments \n6.00pm – Talks from Thames21\, the National Landscapes\, and Long Mead Farm & Nature Recovery Network. \n7.00pm – Workshop 1: Learn about the amazing wildlife and key habitats in and around the river in this area. \n7.45pm – Workshop 2: Have your say on which positive river projects should happen next. \nThis event is supported by the Mend the Gap programme. The vision of the Mend the Gap programme is that the outstanding national landscape that links the Chilterns and the North Wessex Downs will be enhanced and enriched for wildlife\, residents\, and visitors\, helping to heal and soften the scars left by electrification of the Great Western main line.

SUMMARY:London Rivers Week 2026: Liquid History - A Photowalk [FULLY BOOKED - Waitlist Available]
DESCRIPTION:More than just a landmark\, the River Thames has been a water source for Londoners for two millennia; its tides have dictated the shape of the city and the reach of its trade. To walk its banks with a camera is to document the history of the capital. \nJoin us for a free curated photo walk along the Thames\, where documentary maker Gemma Duncan\, together with mudlarks Jessica Forde and Lesley McDonnell\, will walk you past historical ‘destinations’ and introduce basic photography composition to spark the creativity behind your next shot. \nStarting at the medieval entrance to Old London Bridge\, we’ll cross the river and walk the Southbank\, stopping at meeting points along the way. At each stop\, you’ll hear about London’s medieval ‘living’ bridge\, Roman London\, the global trade of the 18th–19th centuries\, Frost Fairs\, and stories of the river that has shaped London so much. \nBetween each meeting point\, you’ll have free rein to snap away\, capturing whatever might inspire you. You’ll be given a map before the walk\, so you’ll know when and where to regroup at the next meeting point. \nJust as the River Thames has evolved\, so has photography. We encourage all mediums\, whether you shoot on 35mm film\, a pinhole camera\, a modern DSLR\, or even a toy camera. After the event\, you’ll have the opportunity to submit your favourite photo to the Thames21 team to be featured in a showcase of the river’s history. \nWhether you’re a complete beginner or a photographer with an interest in history\, come and capture this historic river through a new lens. \n  \nWhat to bring: \n● Weather-Ready Gear: This is London! Please bring a waterproof jacket and a protective cover (or a simple plastic bag) for your camera in case of rain. \n● Comfortable Footwear: We will be walking on a mix of pavement and historic\, often uneven ground. \n● Snacks and Water: While there will be places along the Southbank to get supplies\, bring some snacks along if you want something close to hand. \nIf any questions in advance\, please contact Gemma on gemmaduncan.film@gmail.com. \n  \nMeeting point: Lower Thames St\, London – EC3R 6DN \nBook your spot here.\nAll U18s must be accompanied by an adult. \nIf you sign up for the event but later find that you can’t attend\, please let us know as soon as possible. This way\, we can offer your spot to someone else who would love to participate.

SUMMARY:London Rivers Week 2026: River soundwalk led by afromerm [FULLY BOOKED - Waitlist Available]
DESCRIPTION:Join a free community listening walk that traces the Thames riverside from Rotherhithe to Deptford as part of London Rivers Week 2026. \nMove your body\, listen to your surroundings\, and meet new people. \nA soundwalk is\, as Hildegard Westerkamp described in 1974\, “any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment.” More recently\, writers such as Allie Martin and ameia camielle smith have reimagined soundwalking as a decolonial practice that we can use to reconnect with our environment. \nWhat to expect: As a group\, we’ll walk at a gentle pace\, tuning into the layers of sound that shape the Thames path\, from the obvious to the overlooked. Soundwalking is an opportunity to slow down and share the experience of deep listening in community. \nafromerm will guide the group\, offering prompts along the way\, whether it’s listening for specific sounds\, trying to listen in silence\, or discussing observations with the group. \nWhat to wear: anything comfortable/weather appropriate + comfortable shoes you can walk in for an extended period. \nWhat to bring: a bottle of water and\, if you like\, a sound recording device (voice notes on a phone work well). \nMeeting point to be confirmed nearer the event. \nafromerm is a sound artist and composer from South London. \nBook your place here. \nAll U18s must be accompanied by an adult. \nIf you sign up for the event but later find that you can’t attend\, please let us know as soon as possible. This way\, we can offer your spot to someone else who would love to participate.

SUMMARY:London Rivers Week 2026: Twilight Elver Watch- Guided Field Evening [FULLY BOOKED]
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin the Thames21 team for a FREE guided evening walk along the River Ravensbourne to discover one of the UK’s most remarkable and endangered species\, the European eel. \nDuring this twilight field session\, we will explore the secretive upstream migration of elvers (juvenile eels) as they navigate urban river barriers in their journey inland. Along the way\, we will discuss the unique life cycle of the European eel\, from the Sargasso Sea to London’s rivers\, and consider the challenges they face in heavily modified catchments. \nAs we walk\, we will observe likely migration points such as weirs and outfalls\, and reflect on how river restoration\, fish passage improvements\, and community action can help reconnect habitats and support eel recovery. Participants will also be invited to share their own observations and experiences of London’s rivers. \nDate: 27.05.26 \nTime: 6pm-8pm (approx. timed with dusk) \nMeet at: Ladywell Fields Café\, SE13 \nPlaces are limited\, please sign up here: https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/jiWwxGQBMHhG2X56egjV \nRoute:\nThe walk will be approximately 1.5–2 km along riverside paths. \n\n\nMostly flat but may include uneven ground near riverbanks \n\n\nSome low-light conditions after sunset \n\n\nThe walk will include several stopping points for observation \n\n\nWhat to Bring:\n\n\nWeather-appropriate clothing \n\n\nSturdy footwear suitable for uneven ground \n\n\nHead torch or handheld torch (red light preferred if available) \n\n\nWater bottle \n\n\nFor more details\, contact: carolina.orlandi@thames21.org.uk
