SUMMARY:Thames Road Wetland: Help Manage An Important Wetland
DESCRIPTION:Register here.\nDespite its urban surroundings\, Thames Road Wetland\, which sits within the Green Belt\, is part of a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation\, making it one of the best sites for wildlife in London. It is home to national\, London and Bexley rarities\, including stately Marsh \nSow-thistles\, tiny Brookweed\, Water Voles and Harvest Mice\, along with a wide range of invertebrates and birds such as Water Rail\, Cetti’s and Reed Warblers. \nWetlands like this are crucial for biodiversity and play an important role in purifying water\, reducing flood risk\, and storing carbon. \nLike other sites in urbanised areas\, it lacks the full range of species that would once have helped maintain a balance of wildlife\, such as a variety of large herbivores and carnivores. That’s where the Thames Road Wetlands group comes in… \nWhilst a small group\, led by volunteer site manager Chris Rose\, works at the site most weeks\, we are now holding larger public volunteer sessions once a month on the 2nd Friday of every month with all tools\, waders and kit provided. \nWinter activities include cutting and removing Reed from shallow areas to maintain open water for birds and dragonflies\, sustain a greater variety of plant species and reduce drying out. Also pollarding Sallows (cutting back selected trees and chopping up and stacking the brash)\, silt removal\, occasional path work and some litter picking duties. \nBesides supporting the site’s wildlife\, helping out is a rewarding way to connect with nature and benefit your local community. \nYou will need work clothes\, adequate sun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. There are toilet facilities nearby at the council depot which also has a canteen. DESCRIPTION:Help protect the River Thames by measuring the impact of wet wipes deposited on its shores! \nBOOK HERE. \nJoin Thames21 to gather crucial data on the wet wipes settling in the Thames by getting down and dirty to count them! \nUntil the Thames Tideway Tunnel was connected up earlier this year\, rainfall in central London often caused the sewers to overflow\, sending hundreds of thousands of wet wipes into the river where they accumulated on the riverbed. The Big Wet Wipe Count has allowed us to record the scale of the problem\, and we are looking for volunteers to continue these surveys\, which will now help to assess the impact the tunnel. \nTo assess the scale of the problem and the impact of the tunnel\, we are looking for volunteers to survey the wet wipes on the foreshore and record the final number. \nChildren under 16 need to be supervised by an adult. SUMMARY:The River Cray at Crayford: Waterside Gardens
DESCRIPTION:Come and join us on the River Cray in the centre of Crayford Town!\nWe will be working in and around Waterside Gardens\, Crayford (also known as Cray Gardens) which is in Crayford town centre to remove litter and reduce over hanging vegetation. \nThere will be varied tasks such as entering the river wearing waders to cut branches and remove litter and working bank side to remove cut branches to area that should help reduce fly tipping\, collecting litter from the rivers edge and helping to take it to the collection point. \nTasks will suit those of mixed levels of ability but as a minimum\, you will need to be able to walk on uneven ground. Strong shoes/ boots are required for working bank side. For those entering the water\, waders will be provided. \nWe will provide all tools\, gloves\, equipment and waders.  \nWhere to meet: \nWe will meet at 9:45am\, near the gardens where we will be kitted out and then walk over to the river. The exact meeting place is to be confirmed\, but it will be close to the gardens. Postcode XDA1 4JD Google Maps link here (look for Cray Gardens). We aim to finish at 1pm so it will be around 1:30pm by the time we leave the site. \nPublic transport: The nearest Station is Crayford which is 9 mins walk from the gardens. The closest bus is the 428 which runs along Crayford Way. \nWhat to bring:\nPlease dress for the weather and the task. Long trousers and sleeves are advisable as there are brambles. If you are not working in the river please wear / bring sturdy work boots. Plus layers to keep warm. DESCRIPTION:Come along and join Thames21 as a river citizen scientist on the River Thames. We will be collecting the litter we find and categorising it into sewage derived litter\, plastic items\, and other litter. This will help us to determine the quantity of litter turning up along the riverside and to investigate which litter category is the biggest problem. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to our event which will cover everything you need to know to carry out a litter survey or clean up with Thames21 Citizen Science Volunteer for Thames River Watch. \nBoth new and existing Thames21 volunteers are encouraged to attend and investigate plastic pollution on the Tidal Thames. DESCRIPTION:All are welcome to the Stanley Picker Gallery’s exhibition ‘A Simultaneous Agreement’ presented as part of London Rivers Week 2026. The exhibition officially runs from 22 April to 18 July 2026. \nThe Stanley Picker Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 5pm (during exhibitions). There’s no need to book a ticket\, just drop in. \nRooted in the Hogsmill River beside the gallery\, the exhibition traces connections between English chalk streams\, Saharan phosphate mines\, and global extraction networks\, foregrounding water as both a life source and contested infrastructure. At its centre is a functioning glass fountain that filters river water inside the gallery\, alongside wearable activated-charcoal sculptures that question the logic and limits of technological purification and circular-economy solutions. \nOperating as both exhibition and civic platform\, the gallery becomes a consultation space and site for live performance\, contributing evidence towards a campaign to designate part of the Hogsmill as bathing water. \nAll under-18s must be accompanied by an adult. Along the route\, we’ll meet practitioners\, rangers\, and researchers who will share insights into restoration\, rewilding\, and the challenges facing this vital urban waterway. \nRooted in ideas of river rights and agency\, What the River Wants invites participants to walk with the river – to attend to its voices\, its rhythms\, and the multi-species ecologies it harbours. This event forms part of Manifold – an art project by Emma Smith with UCL Multi Lab and local communities\, and the journey weaves together multiple perspectives of the river\, creating space for reflection\, exchange\, and collective imagining. \nThis is a moment for walkers and wanderers of all kinds – including policymakers\, community organisers\, and curious residents – whether you know the River Lea well or are discovering it for the first time. DESCRIPTION:Kicking off London Rivers Week\, Thames21 will be going on a river walking adventure with artist Remiiya Badru from King Edward Memorial Park\, in Wapping\, and concluding at Blackfriars\, prior to the unveiling of a new artwork in a new exciting space developed for the public realm. \nOn our journey we will be exploring key landmarks along this stretch of river from London’s oldest pub and Captain Kidd\, key bridges and crossings plus some of the lesser known stories of our social geographies\, communities and industrial history. This multisensorial walk will also embody an opportunity to connect to the river as nature for our wellbeing as a sanctuary of sustenance. We will be weaving our way through a number of timelines through witnessing infrastructural and environmental changes. How do we see the river for the future? \nBOOK HERE \nDate and time: Saturday 23rd May. 11.30am-14:00pm \n📏 Distance: ~4.8 km (3 miles) \n📍 Route: We will meet at the new Tideway site at King Edward Memorial Park finishing at the new Tideway riverside public realm at Blackfriars. Click here to view the route we will follow. \n🕒 Duration: ~2 plus hours (give or take depending on pace & breaks) \n👟 Terrain: Flat riverside paths — nice for walking and talking \nBring: Please wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing and bring a bottle of water and snacks. \nArtist Bio: \nRemiiya Badru is a multi-interdisciplinary artist\, whose practice centres on sharing her river-walking adventures through research-informed multimedia artwork and social engagement. She seeks to undertake a multi-layered exploration of the River Thames’ forever changing palette of colour\, sight\, scent\, sound and story\, but also its silences\, omissions and hidden histories of people and place. \nIn her walking practice\, Badru seeks to commune with and responding to the river as a timeless resource from a multi-sensorial perspective\, entering an immersive and embodied meditation in motion. She externalises these experiences through mapping\, wayfinding and placemaking. The stories that Badru seeks to uncover relate to the river as a witness to infrastructural change and flux\, particularly in relation to memory\, colonial and post-colonial histories\, pre- and post-industrial change\, heritage\, natural and man-made environments. \nHer work continues to be navigated by Timehri\, her model ship who is in fact simultaneously her ‘navigator’ and ‘anchoress’ who continues to guide Badru in her travels along the river and associated bodies of water. Together they navigate these embodiments of water as ‘liquid history flowing as a continuum which synchronises the past\, present and future that connects all of us as a global conduit that carries our stories.’ \nAll U18s must be accompanied by an adult.

DESCRIPTION:More than just a landmark\, the River Thames has been a water source for Londoners for two millennia; its tides have dictated the shape of the city and the reach of its trade. To walk its banks with a camera is to document the history of the capital. \nJoin Thames21 for a free curated photo walk along the Thames as part of London Rivers Week\, where documentary maker Gemma Duncan\, together with mudlarks Jessica Forde and Lesley McDonnell\, will walk you past historical ‘destinations’ and introduce basic photography composition to spark the creativity behind your next shot. \nStarting at the medieval entrance to Old London Bridge\, we’ll cross the river and walk the Southbank\, stopping at meeting points along the way. At each stop\, you’ll hear about London’s medieval ‘living’ bridge\, Roman London\, the global trade of the 18th–19th centuries\, Frost Fairs\, and stories of the river that has shaped London so much. \nBetween each meeting point\, you’ll have free rein to snap away\, capturing whatever might inspire you. You’ll be given a map before the walk\, so you’ll know when and where to regroup at the next meeting point. \nJust as the River Thames has evolved\, so has photography. We encourage all mediums\, whether you shoot on 35mm film\, a pinhole camera\, a modern DSLR\, or even a toy camera. After the event\, you’ll have the opportunity to submit your favourite photo to the Thames21 team to be featured in a showcase of the river’s history. \nWhether you’re a complete beginner or a photographer with an interest in history\, come and capture this historic river through a new lens. \n  \nWhat to bring: \n● Weather-Ready Gear: This is London! DESCRIPTION:Join a free community listening walk that traces the Thames riverside from Rotherhithe to Deptford as part of London Rivers Week 2026. \nMove your body\, listen to your surroundings\, and meet new people. \nA soundwalk is\, as Hildegard Westerkamp described in 1974\, “any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment.” More recently\, writers such as Allie Martin and ameia camielle smith have reimagined soundwalking as a decolonial practice that we can use to reconnect with our environment. \nWhat to expect: As a group\, we’ll walk at a gentle pace\, tuning into the layers of sound that shape the Thames path\, from the obvious to the overlooked. DESCRIPTION:As part of London Rivers Week 2026\, come and join Thames Estuary Partnership for a FREE guided walk around the Greenwich Peninsula to explore the lesser-known environmental past and present of London’s famous river. \nTo register click on link to BOOK HERE (tickets available from 2nd March 2026) \nDate: Saturday 23rd May \nTime: 2pm-4pm \nMeeting point: At the ‘History in Motion display’ on Olympian Way \nDuring the walk they will discuss the impacts of Ice Ages\, how the river and its surrounding area has changed as London grew\, the deterioration and revival of aquatic life\, and the future. The talk will also highlight that by investing into the recovery of an urban river\, it can become a healthy and thriving environment with diverse aquatic habitats and species. \nThe walk will provide an opportunity to enjoy the mental health and well-being benefits of being outside and being near water as well #BlueMind. I won’t be able to let you keep these waders\, unfortunately – they will just be loaned to you for the training day. Also\, please let me know if you are going to bring your own waders. \nEquipment: All equipment for the RMI practical fieldwork will be provided on the day – I will give you/the person representing your group your monitoring kit to take home with you. DESCRIPTION:Join Clean Up the River Brent (CURB) enthusiasts at Long Wood Nature Reserve to Collect\, Identify\, Count and Release invertebrates\, key indicators of river health\, as part of London Rivers Week. \n\n\n\n\nRiverfly Taster Session on the Boundary Stream\nJoin us for a fun and hands-on riverfly taster session by the beautiful Boundary Stream! It’s a great chance to discover the amazing critters living in the water and learn why keeping our rivers healthy matters. This in-person event is perfect whether you’re a newbie or just curious about river life. Come along and dive into some cool nature action! \nPlease be prepared with comfortable and weather appropriate clothing and shoes\, healthy snacks and plenty of water. \nU-18s must be accompanied by an adult. \n\nBook your place here.

Join Thames21\, along with our friends at St Mary’s Church Battersea\, for a relaxed riverside picnic and an enjoyable day by the water. \nDate: Sunday 24th May \nTime: 12.30pm to 2pm \nBOOK HERE \nSnacks and drinks will be available. \nSpend time outside this historic church – where poet and artist William Blake was married and where artist J.M.W. Turner once painted – and let the surroundings spark your imagination.
