Join Creekside Discovery Centre on a FREE fish survey as part of London Rivers Week 2026. \nDuring last year’s surveys\, we recorded species including Sea Bass\, Common Goby\, Three-spined Stickleback\, Dace and Eel\, highlighting the importance of the Creek as a habitat for a wide range of wildlife. \nThis survey forms part of a series of regular wildlife surveys looking at all species that use the Creek\, including fish\, birds\, invertebrates\, plants and even algae. The data collected helps assess habitat quality and informs future habitat management. \nNo previous experience is needed — this session is suitable for beginners as well as those who have attended surveys before. \nWhat to expect\n\nA guided fish survey led by experienced staff\nHands-on monitoring of fish species using safe survey techniques\nSupport with identifying species and learning about their life cycles and habitats\nAn opportunity to contribute to long-term monitoring of Deptford Creek\n\n  \nWhat to bring\n\nClothing suitable for the weather\nTrousers and socks that can get wet or muddy\nAll specialist equipment\, including waders\, will be provided\n\nThis event is suitable for adults and children aged 10+. DESCRIPTION:Join Creekside Discovery Centre for a free Low Tide Walk in Deptford Creek as part of London Rivers Week 2026.  \nWith the help of our guides\, you will get down onto the river bed\, explore the ecology and wade into the natural and social histories of this fantastic urban space. \nBy observing and appreciating the variety of wildlife in Deptford Creek\, we hope to foster a greater connection between people and the urban nature around them. \nA Low Tide Walk takes about 2 hours\, which includes putting on waders and preparing for the river\, walking up and back down the river\, using nets to observe the wildlife under the water\, and washing waders and hands after the walk. Please arrive promptly for the time stated at the event. \nBy joining our conservationists on this wade into Deptford Creek\, you will learn about the variety of ways we are working to better understand and support wildlife in the Creek. \nWaders and mud sticks will be provided. \nOnly children aged 8 and above can join this activity. DESCRIPTION:Join urban sociologists Emma Jackson and Louise Rondel and local historians Mel Wright and Andrea Stevens for a FREE guided\, London Rivers Week 2026 walk which traces the route of the Kyd Brook through the suburb of Petts Wood. We will learn about the development of Petts Wood in the 1920s and 1930s and consider how this has impacted on the Kyd Brook. We will also share ‘tales from the Kyd Brook’\, stories gathered at a residents’ workshop which took place during London Rivers Week 2025 which reflect on what it is like to live alongside the brook. We will follow the Kyd Brook into the National Trust woods which once provided the timber for the Petts’ shipyards including at Woolwich and Deptford. As part of London Rivers Week 2026\, we are hosting a free\, linoprint workshop to celebrate the river and its creative legacy. \nThis event is aimed at people aged 16 and above. DESCRIPTION:Join Barnes Common Limited for a free riverside walk as part of London Rivers Week 2026. \nA walk along the Thames Path via Leg O’Mutton Nature Reserve – learn about the ecology and history of this valuable waterside place. \n\n\n\n\nA Bridge to Bridge walk to celebrate London Rivers Week 2026. What better way to celebrate than by taking a walk along this wonderful blue and green corridor? \nBarnes Common Limited deliver nature conservation work on the Leg O’Mutton Local Nature Reserve. This peaceful haven for wildlife was once under threat by development but is now host to a diverse community of flora\, fauna and fungi\, including some saplings planted as part of our project to increase the genetic diversity of Britain’s rarest native tree – the Black Poplar. As we walk\, we’ll discuss this and other conservation practices to protect threatened species and their habitats. \nIt is approximately 3km from Barnes Bridge Station to the foot of the Hammersmith Bridge\, where the talk will end. Participants looking for a longer walk are encouraged to cross the Hammersmith Bridge and turn West to return to Barnes Bridge via the path\, creating a loop of approx 7km. There are several nice places to eat and drink near Hammersmith Bridge if people would like a place to rest after the walk. \nThis walk is suitable for all ages but will be aimed mostly at an adult audience. The path is unpaved and uneven but a mostly firm surface. We aim to walk as a group but we will be mindful of people who would prefer to set their own pace. \nSturdy footwear is recommended and as the event is entirely outdoors\, we remind people to dress appropriately for the weather on the day. SUMMARY:London Rivers Week 2026: Introduction to MoRPh CSci training event
DESCRIPTION:As part of London Rivers Week\, Cartographer are hosting a free\, open\, in-person ‘Introduction to MoRPh’ training. This one-day training course will teach you how to conduct a MoRPh survey so that you can assess and monitor the physical health of your river. \n\n\nWhy MoRPh? The MoRPh survey is conducted at short river lengths and records physical habitat\, vegetation and human impacts. Surveys are entered into the MoRPh Citizen Science database which produces a series of condition indicators about the health of the river. This introductory video provides further information about the MoRPh survey. \nWhat does the training involve? This course will teach you how to conduct a MoRPh survey and how to enter and view surveys in the database. This one-day training includes a morning of classroom teaching\, followed by riverside field training in the afternoon. We will be visiting a newly-restored section of the River Crane to see how MoRPh can be used to monitor the impacts of restoration. Without her\, nothing can be produced\, nothing grows or is reproduced\, since she represents the force of nature that expresses creativity\, nurture and divine love. \nThe River Thames\, into which flows the Wandle River where we usually celebrate Mama Osun\, is constantly bombarded with toxic waste. Wet wipes\, plastic bottles and several other hazardous items are thrown into the river every single day. This is a violation of the sacredness of water and therefore of Mama Osun. All indigenous communities have sacred symbols and rituals that promote harmony with our environment. It is our collective responsibility to embrace this harmony by celebrating and preserving our rivers. \nYou are invited to celebrate Mama Osun as a symbol of our life and love for our environment. We will gather at St Mary’s Church\, Battersea for a communal and collective offering of the dainties she adores. This is a wonderful therapeutic and feel good experience – bring the family\, children (big and small) would love it! Please join us afterwards for refreshments at St Mary’s Church\, where Michelle will give a talk exploring the significance of Mama Osun. \nHer favourite items (ebos)\, which you can bring to add to the collective offering include: \n·       Light coloured fruits (melons\, mangos\, tangerines\, bananas\, golden delicious apples\, etc) \n·       Honey\, sweets (unwrapped) and Brown sugar (even molasses)\, sweet biscuits \n·       sweet drinks\, sweet\, sensual fragrance (incense) \n·       coconuts\, nuts\, pumpkins\, pumpkin seeds\, \n·       flowers (yellow and white\, especially) (lots of flowers) \n·       Shells \n·       plantain\, sweet potato\, cornmeal and sweet corn \nPlease note the above is not exhaustive. Also\, you do not need to bring all\, but what you would like to add to the collective offering. You may wish to make your own personal offering to the river. \n*Bring any kind of musical instruments (bells\, especially)\, to call on the river goddess during the offering. \nWhat to wear \nWe all wear white or yellow or both in her honour (yes even to do a clean up!) She is always stunning looking\, which is why we keep her sacred waters pristine too. \nNOTE: you will be provided with clean-up equipment (boots\, gloves\, bags\, etc.) but you MUST CONFIRM that you will be attending so we have enough supply. \nWhere to meet \nWe meet just at the slipway immediately next to St Mary’s Church\, Battersea: look for the Thames21 vehicle.
