SUMMARY:Foots Cray Meadows - Reed Bed Management
DESCRIPTION:BOOK HERE! \nJoin us at the beautiful Foots Cray Meadows by the historic Five Arch Bridge to help manage the reed beds on the River Cray. \nJust downstream from Five Arch Bridge is a reed bed that several years ago was non-existent. It reached the point where it was completely as wide as the river and became an obstruction. It’s been slowly reduced\, but it needs a final concerted effort to bring it properly under control. The reed mat takes a bit of effort to dig out\, hence the need for a reasonable level of fitness. \nThe work will be carried out standing in the river with waders on and will be rather physical. Waders and all tools will be provided. \nRefreshments will be served after the event. \nThis is event is being run with the Cray River Action Group (CRAG). \nBOOK HERE!

SUMMARY:Thames Road Wetland: Help Manage An Important Wetland
DESCRIPTION:Book Here! \nVolunteering some time for wetland habitat maintenance is a valuable way to help the environment and safeguard fragile ecosystems. Wetlands are crucial for biodiversity and play important roles in purifying water\, controlling floods\, and storing carbon. \nIt’s not only beneficial for the environment but also a rewarding way to connect with nature and benefit your local community. Your efforts can help protect and preserve these vital ecosystems for future generations. \nWe have Thames21 staff-supported events on the second Friday of every month\, if you would like to volunteer\, please come down\, we can kit you out with waders so that you can assist with more Winter Reed cutting in shallow water areas\, designed to try and weaken some of the stands of this vigorous plant in order to maintain a greater variety of vegetation types. \nThere are other tasks too\, such as pruning work to open pathways\, pollarding sallows (trimming small trees)\, and some litter picking duties. We will provide all the equipment needed. \nYou will need work clothes\, adequate sun/rain shower protection and any food and drink required. As it is wild land there are no toilet facilities on site\, but there are toilet facilities and a canteen nearby at the council depot.  Tea\, coffee and biscuits are provided on site. \nThe event starts at 10.30am but please arrive at 10am to get kitted up and briefed at the meeting point\, which is by the steps near Thames Rd on By-way 105 (what3words location: dome.silly.above)\,  near the bridge that crosses the river Cray on Thames Road. To sign up to this event please click this link: \nThames Road Wetland: Help Manage An Important Wetland  \nPlease contact Sam at Samantha.Dhedhi@thames21.org.uk if you have any further questions. Please ensure you book your place so we can provide kit for you. Finish time is around 2pm\, but feel free to go whenever you need to. \nChris Rose. Volunteer Site Manager. \nThis is an event designed for the community\, to engage the local public with the river and not for corporates. SUMMARY:Friary Park Spring Wetland Planting Event
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer with Thames21 to bring the newly excavated wetlands in Friary Park to life! \nThis 4-cell wetland has been designed to store floodwaters and naturally treat water flowing in from Blackett’s Brook. The wetland vegetation plays a crucial role in removing excess nutrients and breaking down pollutants\, while also creating a vibrant habitat for wildlife and enhancing the park’s natural beauty. \nWe need your help to plant the final 1\,000 plug plants in the wetland cells with easy-to-use tools. These plants will help purify the water\, stabilise the banks and create a biodiverse landscape. \nNo experience is needed – all training and guidance will be provided. It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with nature and meet others in your community. \nPlease note\, this activity involves getting in the wetland cells and walking up and down the banks. Wellies and waders will be provided. \nPlease wear weather appropriate clothing you don’t mind getting muddy and bring food and water for yourself. Tea\, coffee and biscuits will be provided. \nWe will meet by the wetland cells on the west side of the park at 9:30am. If you can’t commit to the whole day\, please do still come along to help out! \nWe look forward to seeing you there. \nBook your spot here.\nAny questions\, please email lucy.hutchison@thames21.org.uk \nUnder-18s should be accompanied by an adult.
