SUMMARY:London Rivers Week 2026: Liquid History - A Photowalk [FULLY BOOKED - Waitlist Available]
DESCRIPTION:More than just a landmark\, the River Thames has been a water source for Londoners for two millennia; its tides have dictated the shape of the city and the reach of its trade. To walk its banks with a camera is to document the history of the capital. \nJoin us for a free curated photo walk along the Thames\, where documentary maker Gemma Duncan\, together with mudlarks Jessica Forde and Lesley McDonnell\, will walk you past historical ‘destinations’ and introduce basic photography composition to spark the creativity behind your next shot. \nStarting at the medieval entrance to Old London Bridge\, we’ll cross the river and walk the Southbank\, stopping at meeting points along the way. At each stop\, you’ll hear about London’s medieval ‘living’ bridge\, Roman London\, the global trade of the 18th–19th centuries\, Frost Fairs\, and stories of the river that has shaped London so much. \nBetween each meeting point\, you’ll have free rein to snap away\, capturing whatever might inspire you. You’ll be given a map before the walk\, so you’ll know when and where to regroup at the next meeting point. \nJust as the River Thames has evolved\, so has photography. We encourage all mediums\, whether you shoot on 35mm film\, a pinhole camera\, a modern DSLR\, or even a toy camera. After the event\, you’ll have the opportunity to submit your favourite photo to the Thames21 team to be featured in a showcase of the river’s history. \nWhether you’re a complete beginner or a photographer with an interest in history\, come and capture this historic river through a new lens. \n  \nWhat to bring: \n● Weather-Ready Gear: This is London! Please bring a waterproof jacket and a protective cover (or a simple plastic bag) for your camera in case of rain. \n● Comfortable Footwear: We will be walking on a mix of pavement and historic\, often uneven ground. \n● Snacks and Water: While there will be places along the Southbank to get supplies\, bring some snacks along if you want something close to hand. \nIf any questions in advance\, please contact Gemma on gemmaduncan.film@gmail.com. \n  \nMeeting point: Lower Thames St\, London – EC3R 6DN \nBook your spot here.\nAll U18s must be accompanied by an adult. \nIf you sign up for the event but later find that you can’t attend\, please let us know as soon as possible. This way\, we can offer your spot to someone else who would love to participate.

SUMMARY:London Rivers Week 2026: River soundwalk led by afromerm [FULLY BOOKED - Waitlist Available]
DESCRIPTION:Join a free community listening walk that traces the Thames riverside from Rotherhithe to Deptford as part of London Rivers Week 2026. \nMove your body\, listen to your surroundings\, and meet new people. \nA soundwalk is\, as Hildegard Westerkamp described in 1974\, “any excursion whose main purpose is listening to the environment.” More recently\, writers such as Allie Martin and ameia camielle smith have reimagined soundwalking as a decolonial practice that we can use to reconnect with our environment. \nWhat to expect: As a group\, we’ll walk at a gentle pace\, tuning into the layers of sound that shape the Thames path\, from the obvious to the overlooked. Soundwalking is an opportunity to slow down and share the experience of deep listening in community. \nafromerm will guide the group\, offering prompts along the way\, whether it’s listening for specific sounds\, trying to listen in silence\, or discussing observations with the group. \nWhat to wear: anything comfortable/weather appropriate + comfortable shoes you can walk in for an extended period. \nWhat to bring: a bottle of water and\, if you like\, a sound recording device (voice notes on a phone work well). \nMeeting point to be confirmed nearer the event. \nafromerm is a sound artist and composer from South London. \nBook your place here. \nAll U18s must be accompanied by an adult. \nIf you sign up for the event but later find that you can’t attend\, please let us know as soon as possible. This way\, we can offer your spot to someone else who would love to participate.

SUMMARY:London Rivers Week 2026: Twilight Elver Watch- Guided Field Evening
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin the Thames21 team for a FREE guided evening walk along the River Ravensbourne to discover one of the UK’s most remarkable and endangered species\, the European eel. \nDuring this twilight field session\, we will explore the secretive upstream migration of elvers (juvenile eels) as they navigate urban river barriers in their journey inland. DESCRIPTION:Join urban sociologists Emma Jackson and Louise Rondel and local historians Mel Wright and Andrea Stevens for a FREE guided\, London Rivers Week 2026 walk which traces the route of the Kyd Brook through the suburb of Petts Wood. We will learn about the development of Petts Wood in the 1920s and 1930s and consider how this has impacted on the Kyd Brook. We will also share ‘tales from the Kyd Brook’\, stories gathered at a residents’ workshop which took place during London Rivers Week 2025 which reflect on what it is like to live alongside the brook. We will follow the Kyd Brook into the National Trust woods which once provided the timber for the Petts’ shipyards including at Woolwich and Deptford. From here\, we will leave the brook as it continues its course into Chislehurst then\, as the River Quaggy\, into Greenwich and Lewisham\, joining the River Ravensbourne to eventually flow into the Thames at Deptford. \nAs we walk\, we will invite attendees to share their own knowledge and reflections on living alongside London’s smaller waterways. \nDate: Thursday 28th May \nTime: 6 to 8pm \nMeet at: Station Square\, Petts Wood by JDM\, BR5 1NA \nPlaces are limited\, please sign up here: https://www.pettswood.org.uk/events   \nRoute: \n\nThe route is approximately 2½ km/1½ miles.\nIt is mostly on pavements and will involve crossing some moderately busy roads.\nThe end of the walk will be in the woods where the ground can be uneven.\n\nWhat to Bring: Please wear suitable clothing and sturdy footwear for uneven ground. SUMMARY:London Rivers Week 2026: Barnes Common Riverside Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join Barnes Common Limited for a free riverside walk as part of London Rivers Week 2026. \nA walk along the Thames Path via Leg O’Mutton Nature Reserve – learn about the ecology and history of this valuable waterside place. \n\n\n\n\nA Bridge to Bridge walk to celebrate London Rivers Week 2026. What better way to celebrate than by taking a walk along this wonderful blue and green corridor? \nBarnes Common Limited deliver nature conservation work on the Leg O’Mutton Local Nature Reserve. This peaceful haven for wildlife was once under threat by development but is now host to a diverse community of flora\, fauna and fungi\, including some saplings planted as part of our project to increase the genetic diversity of Britain’s rarest native tree – the Black Poplar. As we walk\, we’ll discuss this and other conservation practices to protect threatened species and their habitats. \nIt is approximately 3km from Barnes Bridge Station to the foot of the Hammersmith Bridge\, where the talk will end. Participants looking for a longer walk are encouraged to cross the Hammersmith Bridge and turn West to return to Barnes Bridge via the path\, creating a loop of approx 7km. There are several nice places to eat and drink near Hammersmith Bridge if people would like a place to rest after the walk. \nThis walk is suitable for all ages but will be aimed mostly at an adult audience. The path is unpaved and uneven but a mostly firm surface. We aim to walk as a group but we will be mindful of people who would prefer to set their own pace. \nSturdy footwear is recommended and as the event is entirely outdoors\, we remind people to dress appropriately for the weather on the day. Bring a bottle of water or hot drink and a snack with you for the stroll. \nExact location of start point (on the Thames Path opposite Barnes Bridge Station) – https://what3words.com/weedy.fires.hurry \nEnd point – https://what3words.com/rounds.camps.mock \nPlease book your place here.
