Great River Rescue events list 2017

Here is the list of events that are being put on in various parts of England. The list will be updated as events come in.

River Don Clean-up

Date of event: October 7, 2017

Event name, venue and time: River Don Clean-up at Chapel of our Lady on the Bridge, Frederick St, Rotherham, South Yorkshire S60 1QQ. 11am to 2pm

Event description:  Join our volunteer team for a clean up of the River Don. We will be working under the Chapel on the Bridge where trolleys, tyres and fly-tipped waste have built up in the river below. The Chapel will also be open for volunteers to explore, including tours to the famous crypt and prison! All equipment will be provided but volunteers should wear appropriate clothing for outdoor work, sturdy shoes and bring bags of enthusiasm! If you would like to access the river, waders/Wellingtons are necessary. The Chapel will provide cakes and refreshments as part of their open day.

Norbury Brook Spruce Up

Event description: A wading litter pick in Norbury Brook (a tributary of The Wandle) and land-based litter pick in Thornton Heath Recreation Ground CR7 7RF. The Friends of Thornton Heath are a Thames21 “Badged Group” and will be supported by Thames21 on the day. Equipment and kit will be provided – all are welcome but we ask that under 16s are accompanied by a parent.

River Lea Clean Up with Stonebridge Lock Coalition and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority

Date of event: October 14, 2017

Event name, venue and time: River Lea Clean Up with Stonebridge Lock Coalition and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. Sandpiper Bridge near Stonebridge Lock, Watermead Way, Stonebridge Lock, Tottenham Marshes, Tottenham. 11am-2pm.

Event description: The Stonebridge Lock Coalition, a Thames21 trained Badged Group, meets regularly to improve their stretch of the River Lea. They are joining forces with the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority to pull fly-tipping and litter out of the riverbed to improve the water habitat for fish and wetland birds such as goosander, teal and gadwall. Meet others, keep fit and discover the amazing biodiversity of the River Lea and Tottenham Marshes. Practical tasks will be for all abilities. No experience necessary. Tools and safety equipment provided. Please wear suitable clothes for the weather and sturdy footwear (trainers are fine, no sandals please). Refreshments will be provided.

Tideway/Business in the Community Clean-up

Date of event: October 20, 2017

Event name, venue and time: Tideway/Business in the Community Clean-up, Queen Caroline Drawdock, Queen Caroline Street, Hammersmith W6 9BX 9.15am to 12.15pm

Event description:  CLOSED EVENT. Staff from Tideway, the company building London’s ‘super sewer’, and Business In The Community, the responsible business network, are holding a joint volunteering event to clean the foreshore and carry out a litter survey at this Hammersmith litter spot. It is a closed corporate event, not open to the public.

 

Clean up at Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre

Date of event: October 21, 2017

Event name, venue and time: Clean up at Leicester Outdoor Pursuits Centre, Loughborough Road, Leicester, Leicestershire LE4 5PN. 1.30-4.30pm.

Event description: Canoeing Litter Pick along the River Soar in Leicester. All safety equipment provided and qualified instructor to look after you while you’re paddling on the river.

Grimsby RiverCare Great River Rescue Clean Up

Date of event: October 21, 2017

Event name, venue and time: Grimsby RiverCare Great River Rescue Clean Up, Duke of York Gardens, Lincolnshire DN31 1XE, 10am to 12:30pm.

Event description: Join us to clean up the river Freshney! We will be working on the banks to remove litter and reclaim our local river for people and wildlife to enjoy once more. We will meet at the Pavillion in the Duke of York Gardens park at 10.00am, you can access this either through the park itself or from Freshney Drive next door to the social club. We provide all the kit, just dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes like trainers or walking boots. Children very welcome but please bring an adult along. There will be refreshments for all volunteers afterwards at the Pavillion.

 

Welsh Harp Reservoir Clean up

Date of event: October 29, 2017

Event name, venue and time: Welsh Harp Reservoir Clean up, Phoenix outdoor centre Cool Oak Lane NW9, 12-2pm.

Event description: The Friends of the Welsh Harp will be joining forces with Phoenix Canoe club to tackle the rubbish of the Brent Reservoir aka the Welsh Harp a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) blighted by plastic pollution. We’ll be using kayaks, canoes and power boats! There’ll be plenty to do on land if going out on the water isn’t for you. If you would like to use a Kayak or Canoe please bring your one star level certificate along with you. Everything else will be provided, including light refreshments, you just need to be prepared to get stuck-in!
