SUMMARY:Thames Connections: People\, Land and River
DESCRIPTION:On 22nd April\, please join us in Goring Village Hall for an inspiring and practical gathering focused on the future of the River Thames between Wallingford and Reading. \nBooking required: Please book your free place here: https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/X5xmWdTlJFLsO7cgYATk \nThis stretch of river is part of daily life for so many of us — a home\, and a place for wildlife\, farming\, walking\, paddling\, fishing\, or simply enjoying nature. This event is an opportunity to bring together local people\, landowners\, community groups and organisations to share what’s already happening\, and explore how we can work together to help this part of the Thames thrive. \nWe’ll hear from Thames21 about the catchment-based approach\, learn from inspiring partnership projects\, and discover more about the work of the National Landscapes and the wider vision for the area. Most importantly\, there’ll be plenty of time to connect\, share ideas and map out priorities — from nature and water quality to flooding\, access and recreation. Teas\, coffees and refreshments will be provided to keep the ideas flowing. \nWhether you’re already deeply involved in river work or simply care about your local stretch of the Thames\, your voice and experience matter. Come along\, meet others who care about the river\, and help shape the next steps for a healthier\, thriving Thames. \nSchedule: \n5.45pm – Doors open. Feel free to come early and get a drink and some refreshments \n6.00pm – Talks from Thames21\, the National Landscapes\, and Long Mead Farm & Nature Recovery Network. \n7.00pm – Workshop 1: Learn about the amazing wildlife and key habitats in and around the river in this area. \n7.45pm – Workshop 2: Have your say on which positive river projects should happen next. \nThis event is supported by the Mend the Gap programme. The vision of the Mend the Gap programme is that the outstanding national landscape that links the Chilterns and the North Wessex Downs will be enhanced and enriched for wildlife\, residents\, and visitors\, helping to heal and soften the scars left by electrification of the Great Western main line.

SUMMARY:Freshwater Watch training: Thames (Wallingford to Caversham)
DESCRIPTION:Are you concerned about the health of the Thames and other local streams and brooks? \nDo you have half an hour a month to spare? \nDo you want to be part of a research project and become a “citizen scientist”? \nIf the answer to the above questions is yes\, then we invite you to become one of our new Thames Water Watchers! \nApologies\, this event is now fully booked. You can sign up to the waiting list here: https://book.plinth.org.uk/e/CYp5dxH6Ul9914WVpG04 \nIf you want to be added to our local mailing list to hear about our next opportunity\, please email claire.robertson@thames21.org.uk \nWater watchers test for pollution in their local river or stream regularly\, usually once a month. The data collected helps to protect rivers. All of the data will be shared with the local group\, catchment partnership\, the Environment Agency\, Thames Water\, local councils and the media\, and used to highlight issues in our local rivers and push for improvements and change. \nFor this training event\, we are looking for volunteers who are interested in monitoring the Thames from Wallingford to Caversham. \nA map of the potential sample sites can be viewed here: https://tinyurl.com/ae2x7h5s  \nThe training event will cover: \n\nAn introduction to river health and river pollution\nIntroduction to citizen science for rivers\nHow to take a freshwater watch sample for phosphates\, nitrates\, and monitor visual pollution (field demonstration)\nCollecting and uploading data to the freshwater watch website\nSelecting a sample site\nBeing a guardian and advocate for your local river: first steps\n\nThis training event is run by Thames21 on behalf of the South Chilterns Catchment Partnership. This project was made possible with support from the Mend the Gap programme. \n \nThe South Chilterns Catchment Partnership is a group of organisations and individuals who are working together for a healthy\, thriving water environment for people and wildlife. Our vision is a network of healthy streams\, rivers and other freshwater habitats\, with flourishing nature and clean\, plentiful water\, particularly in our globally rare chalk streams. People value and enjoy the freshwater environment and use it sustainably\, and nature and communities are resilient to flooding and the effects of climate change.  More information here: https://southchilternscatchmentpartnership.org/
