Thamesmead waterway action day

When: Saturday, September 22
Where: Gallions Lake, 10am – 3pm
Thames foreshore, 10am – 1pm

Volunteers are needed to help clean-up Thamesmead’s waterways in a day of community action this weekend.

London’s leading waterway charity, Thames21 is working in partnership with Gallions Housing Association and the local community to clean and green Gallions Lake and the Thames foreshore, supported by the Big Lottery Fund.

The two events will be run simultaneously on Saturday September 22 in an intensive effort to improve these community assets for people and wildlife.

Thames21 South East London Coordinator Vic Richardson said: “I encourage anyone that is able to come along and get involved and to help make a practical difference to the local area. It’s a great chance to get outside, see these valuable spaces from a different perspective and to help make sure we can enjoy them into the future.”

Urban waterways such as Gallions Lake and the iconic Thames are vital habitats for wildlife, as well as being great assets for recreation and leisure. Removing litter not only visually improves the area, but helps reduce the likelihood of wildlife injury and death through choking, ingestion or getting caught in waste. Managing vegetation helps ensure that habitats remain healthy and habitable for wildlife, while allowing human access to these spaces.
