Thames21’s response to Ofwat’s ‘record-breaking’ fine to Thames Water

The record-breaking fine handed out today by Ofwat to Thames Water highlights the urgent need for stronger enforcement to protect our rivers.  Water companies must prioritise river health — and be held accountable when they fail to do so.

Thames21 has long called for greater investment in sewage treatment and infrastructure to stop pollution at its source. We expect Thames Water to meet its environmental responsibilities and deliver improvements without delay.

Protecting our precious rivers requires collective action—from government bodies, regulators, environmental organisations, investors, and water companies. Only by working together can we clean up our water and secure a healthier future for our rivers and communities.

Rivers trusts such as Thames21 play a vital role in improving rivers and creating places that everyone can enjoy. During London Rivers Week (30 May–8 June), we invite Londoners to explore, enjoy and stand up for their local rivers and celebrate the vital role they play in our city.
