Thames21’s statement on the closure of Henley Swim

We were extremely sad to learn that Henley Swim has stopped trading and won’t be running events this year.

Thames21 has worked closely with the Henley Swim  during past events and projects, and it is so sad to know that this organisation will no longer be able to facilitate events that encourage safe and fun swimming in the Thames.

Campaigning about poor water quality in the Thames is intended to help lobby for change to create a healthy river. However, we realise that news surrounding poor water quality can put people off swimming. Yet, there’s a balance to be struck.

The news that Henley Swim has closed shows that there is so much more to do to both to address river pollution and to help the public make informed decisions about swimming. We agree with the Rivers Trust statement that safe river swimming is possible in the UK, but swimmers must be aware of the risks and take necessary precautions when doing so.

As the Rivers Trust states, swimming in rivers makes people more likely to support environmental causes, and the outdoor swimming community has become a vital voice for rivers in recent years. Today we are thinking of those swimmers who have lost the opportunity to participate in iconic mass participation swimming events, as well as the dedicated organising team at Henley Swim.

Along with our volunteers, partners and the Rivers Trust movement, we will continue to fight hard to improve our water quality and health of our rivers for the sake of swimmers, river users and wildlife.
