London Rivers Week: Twilight Elver Watch- Guided Field Evening

Join the Thames21 team for a FREE guided evening walk along the River Ravensbourne to discover one of the UK’s most remarkable and endangered species, the European eel.
During this twilight field session, we will explore the secretive upstream migration of elvers (juvenile eels) as they navigate urban river barriers in their journey inland. Along the way, we will discuss the unique life cycle of the European eel, from the Sargasso Sea to London’s rivers, and consider the challenges they face in heavily modified catchments.
As we walk, we will observe likely migration points such as weirs and outfalls, and reflect on how river restoration, fish passage improvements, and community action can help reconnect habitats and support eel recovery. Participants will also be invited to share their own observations and experiences of London’s rivers.
