This new project, funded by City Bridge Trust, aims to encourage communities and groups to run waterway volunteering activities, successfully and safely.
This free training and accreditation programme combines classroom sessions and practical volunteering supported by Thames21 staff.
The classroom sessions will enable participants to:
- Understand why waterway improvements are important
- Appreciate Thames21’s vision and values
- Identify local waterways appropriate for a Thames21 clean-up event
- Investigate local access, ownership and user groups
- Examine Thames21 health and safety procedures, particularly the hazards and risks associated with waterway clean-ups
- Recognise the characteristics, expectations and responsibilities of a Thames21 leader
- Develop and improve the skills which enable you to lead a group of volunteers
Practical volunteering at Thames21 events will provide participants with the opportunity to put the theory into practice, working at their own pace to develop the competencies needed to complete the accreditation.
On completion of the programme, participants will be able to run their own clean up events, quality badged and insured by Thames21. Participants will then have the opportunity to gain further free training on waterway improvement and management, including habitat work and community engagement. They will also benefit from ongoing free support, advice and monitoring.
For more information or to participate in the training programme, please contact the Training Officer, Julia Makin or call 020 7213 0167.

Hi there I am a Scout Leader with the 15th Wood Green Scouts
and we are running a badge which involves the kids doing 6 hours of volunteering and also part of the award involves someone to come along and talk to the scouts about what they do, is this something that we could do?
Regards
Ian Stamford
Hi Ian, thanks for getting in touch with us, we’d be happy to help!
Have a look at the events we’ve got lined up for the Big Waterways Clean Up on the website. Your Scouts could take part in any of the public events, though it would probably be a good idea to contact Ben Fenton (ben.fenton@thames21.org.uk) to discuss your plans in more detail.
Feel free to drop me an email about the talk element too and I will put you in touch with the best person to meet your needs.
I hope that helps.
Best wishes,
Julia.
