Guest post: Volunteer opportunities with Haringey Water Squad in 2023

The Haringey Water Squad is a group of local people who act to improve the quality of local watercourses and work together to understand them better.

  1. Channel-clearing in the Moselle Brook, Tottenham

Meet other enthusiastic people and learn about the Moselle Brook and its wildlife in Lordship Rec N17 6NU. We’re looking for volunteers to clear vegetation, silt and litter, which will help maintain water flow and to build up levels of dissolved oxygen in this section of Haringey’s hidden river. We’re also trying to identify and protect the micro-habitats of the Moselle Brook. We meet roughly once a month on a Saturday. Equipment is provided. You don’t need prior experience but should expect to work closely in our established team. We have fun, get muddy and enjoy the beauty of the Brook and its surroundings! For more info, please contact John Miles (07817 424356; johnmiles68@yahoo.co.uk) or Caroline Jepson from the Friends of Lordship Rec (07914 641167).

2) Leading Action for Healthy Rivers in Wood Green

We’re looking for two experienced gardeners to guide our work clearing weed-choked rain-beds in Crescent Gardens N22 5NJ originally planted as part of a Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) to filter and hold contaminants from road run-off. You’ll need the confidence to identify survivors of the original planting (and their seedlings) and to help other volunteers build their knowledge of plants and develop their skills. We have the original planting and maintenance plans and will be on site at least four times a year on Saturday mornings. We bring our own tools. Contact the convenor John Miles on 07817 424356 or johnmiles68@yahoo.co.uk
